He was a bit of a one-paced plodder, but had decent power. Fairly limited i suppose but i imagine that today he would have fared better and got at least one title shot; well if thompson, solis and arreola can get theirs then why not gary mason?
Terrible shame about his untimely demise, the chap who made the tasteless comment re that shld be banned...

Gary Mason was a decent enough fighter, big puncher, and had a good chin. Losing to Lewis, well no shame in that. And for someone to make a joke about the accident that ended his life is just lame, someone losing their life is not a joke. I spoke to Gary on numerous occasions and perhaps if you had known him, you would be a bit more respectful too, he truely was a nice guy.

I think if Mason was around in this era would have had a great chance of being a world champion. Very good fighter.

    I liked Mason,

I had the pleasure of meeting him at Oldham leisure centre many years ago. when he was commentating on a Pat Barrett fight cant remember is opponent, it was something johnson i think from america.

During talking to him, he told me he was lost getting there and had followed me, i asked him how he knew i was going there, to which he said he didn't but took a chance because i had a mini pair of gloves on my mirror in my car, he had followed me around Oldham for about 15mins .

Had a really great chat with him, he even signed another pair of those mini gloves for me, still have them to this day.

Lovely bloke and a very good fighter.

Very big and hard hitting but never scaled any heights. I would liked to have seen him in with Bruno but Mickey Duff always kept 0 intact big punchers well away from his boy.

Mason was also with Duff as was Horace Notice who was another good but small HW who would of done well as a modern CW 200 lb.

Gary Mason was always in Bruno's shadow but would of done well in this era.

Only one defeat on his record to an ATG in Lewis,by the way a real classless comment on this thread Mason always had a big smile on his face and always had time for the fans.

Was heavy for his day - and very heavy handed. Very hard puncher indeed. Witty intelligent guy too.

It was a very frustrating situation back then, i liked all of the fighters you mention, but for some reason the fights didn't happen, and they would have been huge and great fights.

During that Era, lots of fights didn't get made and would have been classics and still talked about today, but sadly they never happened.

But yes a very likeable guy, big heart and a booming laugh and smile.

In my opinion he was just left to get on with it after his loss to LL.

    He deserved better.

Mason was a solid fighter with a good chin, he could also hit & was only beaten by Lewis, stopped Biggs when he was still a decent fighter.
