How good was Golota actually ?

Not a single big win. Had some talent, obviosly, but he really didn't want to be a fighter.

 

I think I share the sentiment s of his trainer "he should have shoved that mouthpiece up golotas asz during the Tyson fight."

Also, smh, wth? In golotas comeback 2nd return after layoff etc "he became a good boy" I mean to the point of not even fouling, vs Byrd, Ruiz, Brewster etc. his head was finally in the game.

 

At his best, he was better than Riddick Bowe. He could outbox Chris Byrd and he could out-rough John Ruiz.

But he got steamrolled and was not as good as Lennox Lewis or Mike Tyson.

So, pretty good.

I actually met him around 2005. He was still really intimidating then.

I saw a recent picture of him. He lives in Northbrook, a Chicago suburb. He's totally shrunk.

True but he did lose highly controversial to Ruiz, and his draw vs Byrd was highly controversial aswell alot of people thought he won both fights.

And he definitely battered Bowe in both fights when he was considered number 1 Heavyweight, technically they are two wins for Bowe via DQ. But in reality Golota beat the living heck out of Bowe, and if Golota didn't throw it away being such a head case then he wins both fights under normal circumstances.

 

Skilled boxer which is a rarity for someone that big.

 

Very skilled and much talent, but mental too weak for the elite.

If he meets someone with punching power, durability and mental strenght he usually freaks out and cant control his emotions.

He could control himself against Byrd and J. Ruiz, yes, but those two arent the biggest punchers. And he could hurt Ruiz and knock him down.

Guys like Lewis (no shame) but also someone like Brewster was too much for him. He cant take it when ppl can take his shots but have punching power too.

About 20 yrs ago some ppl thought he had a chance to beat Vitali. Today there is no argument to think that anymore. He is mentally way too weak for him.

Even 10 yrs ago i saw him as a huge favorte against Mavrovic (Europe vs Europe, Poland vs Croatia), but Zelko was mentally much tougher as him and had a much better chin. Even if Andrew was the better and more skilled fighter.

 

Al Certo recanted that after he found out how serious Golota’s injuries were.

Underacheiver. For a large man with skills he was never a serious contender. I know people on this forum will feed you BS like he would beat AJ if he were fighting today, but he'd be 50/50 with the likes of Whyte and Parker IMO.

 

Byrd had lost his speed, which was his bread and butter. Ruiz...well...I give him some credit but the jab;n;grab is borderline illegal.

As for Bowe, a DQ is a DQ.

 

Fantastic boxer.

The up-and-down combinations, the willingness and skill to change the head slots down the centreline and unload with both hands, the damn jab.

Big, string, durable, in some instances tougher than people give him credit for. Beat Ruiz, beat Byrd, all while washed and one-handed.
