How good was Grebs comp?

Are you of the belief that a crudely-skilled fighter with average punching power and a sloppy defence could beat the likes of Tunney and Loughran, based upon how they look on film?

 

Explain please.

 

Tunney was green when he lost to Greb........ It never happened again......

I have not seen what transpired in the fight with Tommy Loughran..... If you got the fight on tape, I'd like to see it.....

By many accounts reported, Greb was a bit on the wild side with his punches and he did leave himself open for counters....... I see the top-notch champs who owned finess and skills to drive Greb and his style crazy in the ring.......

Just what else could Harry Greb have theoreticaly done to get your vote in this poll?

He defeated 14 lineal champions including 7 light heavyweight champions and 1 heavyweight champion.

He basicaly beat everybody worth beating.

A win over Jack Dempsey would have been nice but Dempsey wouldn't fight him.

What else can the guy do?

 

Well the TS could've provided us with another option that wasn't beat the best fighters in history

I would say however his era was prety stacked at both middleweight and light heavyweight.

 

Something which needs to be considered when contemplating the possibility that Greb was the rightful winner of his fourth bout with Tunney is the fact this newspaper draw took place in Cleveland less than two months after Gene virtually (and almost literally) boxed Carpentier's ears off for the movie cameras in the Polo Grounds. (Tunney broke down all the cartilage tissue in Carp's ears, so that they were actually folding down and flopping loose at the end.) Some professional ringsiders had Greb pitching a near shutout in Cleveland, nine rounds to one. Take a look at Tunney-Carpentier. That was no embryonic and still developmental Gene who Harry put through hell in Cleveland, and this when Greb was already past 30 years of age!

It took Tunney five tries to finally repay the aging Greb the inaugual beating Harry dished out to Gene in May 1922, and that was the fight immediately preceding Tunney's masterclass against Tommy Gibbons. (Greb still had enough left to handle Johnny Wilson for a third time in his next outing, then Walker and Rosenbloom back to back a few months later. Harry was 31 years old when he managed Walker so conclusively that even Mickey did not dispute the verdict.)

When did Harry peak exactly? When he still had two good eyes (which we know, because US Navy would not have accepted him otherwise) between early 1918 and early 1920, when he won about 75 straight, indefatigably and relentlessly beat Augie Ratner over a distance of 20 stanzas by a margin of 17W-1L-2E in rounds scored, and was routinely thrashing the likes of IBHOFer Battling Levinski (X5), IBHOFers Tommy and Mike Gibbons, Bill Brennan (X4), IBHOFer Billy Miske (X2), Dempsey nemises Willie Meehan, Eddie McGoorty, Joe Chip (to avenge his only true knockout loss when he was a badly outweighed teen novice), Gunboat Smith, IBHOFer Jack Dillon, and Mike McTigue (X2). (Again, that was just during the two year interval between early 1918 and early 1920. That's three or four careers worth of achievement for today's babied pansies, and Greb hadn't even started in yet on upstarts such as IBHOFer Tunney, IBHOFer Walker, IBHOer Flowers, IBHOFer Loughran, Wilson, Norfolk, IBHOFer Slattery and IBHOFer Rosenbloom.)

Bravo to you for your analysis of harry Greb...His record his eye handicap , puts Greb almost in the realm of the supernatural...To fight and beat heavier men at a sprinters pace for 15 rounds, in a 300 bout career, can never be duplicated again...His utter fearlessness, fighting weekly everyone, everywhere, anytime against all weights, all races,all styles,winning virtually from all of them makes Harry Greb ,P4P , the greatest, of them all...
Question ?...What fighter in history near his 5.8/160 pounds could have duplicated his career against the same opposition and and amounts of fights{300] ? Answer honestly , NO One...

You would have to have a serious block when it came to that era not to rate these guys among the best in their respective weight classes.
