How good was Hagler's power?

When he stepped into his power it was exceptional, but he was no Mugabi or Hearns with one punch usually. Although against Hamsho in the rematch, Fully Obel and Lee he had one punch power.. He was as strong and solid as middleweight as you can get.

 

I'd say he was pretty heavy handed, sort've like Vitali with attrition type power. Tho i reckon if he tryed to slug and put everythign behind his punches like Mugabi he'd have more 1 punch KO's to his resume.

 

If he were a heavyweight he would've had Joe Frazier power, as opposed to George Foreman power. In other words, he was a banger but not on the top tier of bangers for sheer brute force.

 

He hit about as hard as he needed to. Very accurate and precise with his punches.

 

Duran said all his power was concentrated in his right hand, that, "the left is dead." Antuofermo said after their draw that he rated Marv fifth in power among the middleweights he'd taken on up to that time ("He didn't hit as hard as I expected'), and Hearns said before SRL-Hagler that Ray was the harder puncher.

However, the right jab was one of Marv's power shots. With that way he had of stepping into it, he could look more lethal than many who swing for the rafters.

 

I'm thinking he was more of a cumulative puncher, but there's no doubt the man could hit hard.

 

More of a heavy-handed accumulation hitter than a one-shot guy. He did show the ability though at times to stop or hurt a guy with a well-placed punch or combo.

He hurt Caveman with a jab, dropped and hurt Hamsho with a combo early in the fight, nearly decapitated Hamani with a combo early in the fight, took out Obej with a right hook.

So he could crack, obviously.

 

It's hard telling with these guys. Jorge Solis maintained that Manny Pacquiao hit like a girl. :conf

 

It's much more of a tenuous consensus than the testimonials we have about the power of Shavers by those who remembered being hit by Earnie in competition.

The power of Marv's left hand should be scrutinized more carefully though. We saw him deck Vito with it in their rematch. (Antuofermo didn't seem hurt by it, but the force behind Hagler's left out of the southpaw stance caught Vito coming in and drove him back and down hard.) We should be looking for more examples of Marv's left alone producing self contained displays of power in extant footage. Usually, it seemed his left was most effective after his right had done the initial damage. (During his heyday, Frazier was also credited as a two handed puncher, but few today aside from Chuvalo give Smoke's right the kind of credit it was given 45 years ago.)

 

Hagler was a very good puncher. He probably had the same power as Duran did at lightweight.

I'd rather get hit by Hagler at 160 than Hearns at 154....Put it that way.

He was a brutal puncher ... ask Vito about the rematch ... Hearns, please ... perhaps he forgot dancing like a girl and having to be carried out of the ring in front of the world ..

I'm not saying that Hagler had powder puff power........But you could easily post 4 or 5 Whitaker videos with the same kind of brutality. Infact, Whitaker layed out Nazario with a single left hand for a full 10 count. No follow up punches, just a pure one punch KO.
