He was too wild, kept running into punches all night. His main problem was that he kept smothering his own punches on the inside. He was tryin to hard to get to Floyd.. He could have done a lot better with calmer mindset and less hugging on the inside.
Many said Hatton would win if Cortez didn't break them up? Can't say I've seen many people saying that. Hatton did well considering he was fighting above his weight class and was being hounded by an awful ref who didn't let Hatton do what he does. The first 6 rounds were great to watch before Mayweather started hitting Ricky with clean shots at will. A better ref would have just meant Hatton had more success before losing.
Very impressive performance, one of his best. Left everything in the ring, looked sharp, fast and prepared...could have done better though (but then again, Hatton's none success was also down to Mayweather and Cortez (at times)). No, Graham and Hatton where perfect for each other. Complimented each others style. IMO, no. He was supposed to have the better inside work, and he was supposed to target Mayweather's body, and land on any target that was offered, including the arms. Mayweather was just too good at every range. One thing that again impressed me about Hatton was his footspeed, he had elite footspeed...footspeed that troubled Mayweather for many a round, even if Hatton wasn't connecting as much as he would have liked. Hatton's footspeed allowed him to avoid/make Mayweather miss with the left hook a lot more than we are used to seeing...he just couldn't time Hatton coming in until Mayweather had slowed him down enough.
Good post above, Hattons footspeed was elite. As pretty much summed up ricky did well for 6 rounds, Cortez was **** but not as influential as some made out and ricky was never good enough to beat Floyd. At no point in the fight did i think he would win and after the 6th it got pretty nasty. Good performance against lets face it, a special fighter.
It was a great performance, and he just happen to be going against the best fighter around.. Not a bad trainer, he probably would have lost with any gameplan, and he would have lost with any referee as well. Mayweather beat Hatton at his own game, and there wasn't anything he nor any other referee or trainer would have done to change the result.
Agree with all this. I thought Maweather had the better of Hatton on the inside. It's a shame Cortez kept breaking them up so often but I doubt it would have made too much of a difference to the final result. Hatton kept walking straight into Mayweather's right hand.
Not sure how much of an affect Cortez had, since Floyd could outdo him on the inside, but Hatton came to fight and put up a great effort with consistent pressure, varied punches, and quick footwork.
That was a **** fight for Hatton. Everybody know that Hatton chance of winning the fight was to fight on the inside and pressure Floyd. The ref wanted none of that but for Ricky to box Floyd...how is Ricky going to win a boxing match against Floyd .
Hatton took a bit of a beating and Luis Collazo - not a renowned puncher - gave him everything he could handle at Ricky's one other fight at 147. The 12th round also showed how open he was for a southpaw left and he was very lucky that Collazo didn't land that earlier in the bout. From memory he won that fight on a very tight margin of points that was helped along with his dodgy knockdown of Collazo in the first round. Urango nearly folded him in half in around the 5th or so in the next fight but Hatton boxed pretty well and did his own share of holding to victory in that one. Castillo didn't really give us much of anything in their fight together when Ricky stopped him with that lovely body shot. The Mayweather performance was blamed a lot on Cortez who did seem to break a lot - BUT - Floyd fought very smart, nearly every time Ricky got inside and kinda grappled Floyd, Floyd would lock one of Hattons gloves under his arm and put his other forearm in Hattons' face. The ref HAD to break them in those instances in particular and that shut down a lot of Hatton's effectiveness on the inside as much as anything Cortez was or wasn't doing for Floyd or any of the other justifications Hatton gave for loosing. When Hatton was at range, Floyd ate him alive - those lead rights from the crouch I remember being particulalry fast and had Hatton in all sorts of confusion before the end came. With Pacquiao, I don't think Ricky was shot or that different a fighter to the Floyd version, Hatton simply had NO answer for the blueprint Roach took from the Collazo fight and when Manny applied his level of speed and aggression to Hatton - Well we all saw what happened there.
Who know if he'll win or not but you can't just take away a man game and expect him to fight the other guy game . Everybody know that Ricky is not going to win a boxing match against Floyd, his only chance is to pressure Floyd and pound him on the inside. It seems that everytime Ricky get on the inside Cortez wanted none of that.
Mayweather broke Hatton, who was suffering from depression due to the loss before the Pac fight and looked like **** at the weigh in. I'm not disagreeing with other points other than Hatton was the same fighter against Pac as the evidence and eyes in my head tell me a different story.
