no way ike destroyed tua, but both i think broke the heavyweight record or are up there for most punches thrown in a heavyweight fight. i think ike would of been a very popular champ, but maybe had some great fights with the klits, lewis, rahman, etc. maybe even win some of those, but one thing for sure he always was an exciting fighter.
Ike work rate was great and his win over Byrd by KO, but he was outboxed by Byrd first a couple rounds and with Tua it was close fight. For example wlad easily outboxed Byrd..
I never claimed he was more skilled than Wlad. Wlad is very skilled and uses his height and reach in a way where its difficult to score points for anybody so small. Ike was a different kind of fighter. It's no shame to drop rounds to Byrd, he's a very quick skilled guy that is tough work when he is sharp early on. But in the end Ike dismantled Byrd quicker than Wlad on either occasion, Byrd even took Wlad to points. That tells you Ike had other things Wlad maybe does not. This is just styles. And no, I'm not saying Ike was or could have been better.
A huge puncher with both hands, granite chin and decent skills. Sadly we'll never know how good he could have been because he was still progressing when he threw away his career.
After the Tua fight was ike not already off the rails. I know he beat Byrd after but was he not already claiming of seeing demons ? :ldevil
Some people must not have seen the Tua vs Ike fight. They broke the record for most punches thrown; ans these were not whimpy little slaps. These guys just slugged it out. If Ike maintained that level of punch output, combined with his chin, and okay-ish skill level, he could beat up lots of guys. I'd favor him over everyone except Lennox Lewis and Vitali Klitschko. I think these taller types could outbox him. I don't think Wlad would do well because he still freaks out a bit when someone rushes him (he is getting better though); and Ike would not get discouraged enough to stop as evidenced by taking a crapload of Tua shots. On the flip side, there is a big likelihood that like with many slugger/puncher types, Ike would have fallen in love with the power, neglected the training and become a lazy fat guy who would lose lopsided decisions to people he could beat if he cared enough (see David Tua) And yeah, his craziness might also have worked against him.
ike was an entertaining fighter in his day but gets WAAAY over rated on here talent wise i have him on par with guys like rahman, maskaev, ruiz, chagaev. sure he is big, has a solid chin and a monster work rate, but thats just enough to keep him competitive with the above mentioned fighters. The eras greats (klits/lewis) would have disposed of him in a rather easily. Lewis would have used footwork, power, and a solid jab to keep ike on the outside for the entire fight.( ike would taste the power early on and like tua, would be content to just survive) i would like to give him a punchers chance, but he is to slow of foot and hand, i dont think he could land the hail marry. Lewis by shut out or ko by rounds 9-11. a fight with vitaly would be even less competitive as he had the style to deal with ike's come foreward/swarming style. vitaly would control the distance and would catch ike coming in often. i see this one playing out like the peter fight. imo,a fight with wlad is his best chance but its still slim. wlad keeps him off balance with the jab , keeping ike from setting up his combos. however, unlike with the other two fighters ike might be able to sneak in the lucky shot, but more then likely he will be hugged to death when he gets into range. i give wlad a 10-2 maybe 9-3 decision.
You can always tell when someone never seen the fight. Tua and Ike broke punch stats for a heavyweight in the fight.
People are confusing being a "good boxer" with winning rounds. You don't need to be a good boxer to win a rounds. You just hit the other guy more/better than he hits you.
Exactly. Ibeabuchi is EXTREMELY overrated based on what he actually did in the ring. Some act like he's unbeatable off of TWO fights against contenders, the rest against stiffs. It's insane the way this gets overrated - unbelievable, really.
