Any of you remember watching him fight? And I don't need any Box Rec warriors trying to tell me that he wasn't any good or what have you. Save that bullshit for your mama.
Go to :40 seconds https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KYMdycQT1w Actually a pretty tough guy .. went five w Foreman .. the distance w Norton and a lot of other semi-decent guys ...
I read he now claims not be Irish at all but the secret love child of Italian maffia Don Albert Anastasia who ran what became the Gambino crime family. Anastasia was one of the biggest Dons of all time. Prety intresting life. Irish, Italian, heavyweight boxer, film star and the son of America's biggest mafia boss! http://m.youtube.com/index?desktop_uri=/&gl=GB#/watch?v=q1Kov4dJoOw
Intimidating looking fellow at 6'6" and well above 230 lbs. Probably strong as well. Didn't look like he knew how to use his size too well based from what little I've seen of him. He did okay for a club fighter/journeyman type, but obviously didn't have what it took to go any further than that.. Interesting guy in personal life from what I've read. I'll always remember him as the big super villain from superman II
Giant Jack O'Halloran as he was known in his fighting days was a respected journeyman no less. I remember looking for his name in the old Ring's monthly result columns to see if he had sprung an upset often. His biggest win perhaps was over Ali's brother Rahman. If I recall correctly Ali was out boxing Jack when he bounced off the ropes and into a O'Halloran right hand for the ko.
Is that the only footage of him boxing? I looked at his record & he fought a lot of names. Getting wacked by Mac Foster in one round though? Huge guy judging from the above video. Probably didn't really need his cohorts in the Superman movies.
He was a solid journeyman , who beat a couple of fringe contender types, but usually lost when he stepped up against the class of the division. An honest pro.
O Halloran beat Alvin Blue Lewis,Henry Clark,Manuel Ramos,Danny McAlinden,Carl Gizzi ,and Terry Daniels. decent fighters, not top flight but better than Rahman, imo.
They were indeed, and he beat both Ramos and Daniels before their careers went steep downhill. If I remember correctly I think he also beat an ancient Big Cat Williams. Not a bad resume at all.
Here he is getting knocked out by Ron Lyle at the start of this documentary. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KYMdycQT1w
You could say he had a punch that sent superman flying backward! In a boxing ring, he was an average skilled big man that lacked power, speed and didn't have great durability either. A journeyman.
A handheld camera movie film of his match with Foreman has been on youtube now and then. George rated Jack among the five hardest punchers he got hit by. He's an active participant on his own IMDd messageboard, and has otherwise long had an Internet presence, so he might be the best source himself to ask about extant action footage. Leading up to Foreman's knockout, we do see George ducking underneath O'Halloran's shots, an unusually proactive display of punch avoidance on Foreman's part showing that Jack's power had indeed gotten his respect. O'Halloran versus fellow big man Wepner? I'll take Jack in that pairing, either on cuts or by decision. The story goes that Ali wanted O'Halloran to knock his brother Rahman out of boxing, then Jack could square off with Muhammad by using Ali's avenge of his brother as the promotional angle to build it up. Jimmy Summerville's knockout of O'Halloran capsized those road show plans, then Norton's upset of Ali ten days later changed history so completely that Jack's only hope of reviving his career might have been to get his hands on Norton in rematch. (He gave Ken ten rounds of hell four months after Lyle knocked him out. Maybe Ron's best knockout on film, considering it happened when O'Halloran was getting as good as he ever got.) Instead, he became a famous movie actor w/out having to take debilitating physical punishment, or memorizing any dialogue. Tough break!
He was in a gangster film with Robert Mitchum. " Farewell My Lovely",1975, His character was aptly named Moose.
