Upon rewatch sometime within a couple of years I came to believe Zbik deserved it. Look at my posts re: his name as search keyword from 2015, 2018, 2020, etc and I've consistently held that it was a lucky day for JCCJ.

There might be a complete rewatch scorecard floating around somewhere. I could give it another with fresh 2024 eyes but... it's hardly a treat.

If the forum's most experienced scorer watched it and gave it to Junior on the night, I think calling it a gift after even one million slomo reviews is still hyperbolic, honestly. A bit hoopleheaded, if our interpersonal dynamic would allow without severe offense. Regardless, watching it again is probably about as worthwhile as when I searched that thread to see what I posted. Which I didn't see. And it wasted an amount of time I could've spent with my family but more likely would've spent cleaning my radiator with that furry neon green thing I wish weren't in my house and could somehow just look nicer but they only make them to look as doofy as possible.

He clearly wasn't terrible as he was considered a 'good' opponent for people like Golovkin and Froch wanting a 'big Vegas fight'.
And he did TKO Andy Lee and had Martinez in trouble.

But it seems like he relied heavily on being a massive drainer and weight bully, though of course weight bullies don't exist.
To demonstrate what a weight bully he was, even though they don't exist, Andy Lee must have been a big cutter since he was 6'2 and fought at MW. Yet he looked small compared to Chavez Jr., like they didn't belong in the same division.

Good enough to be a solid top 10 guy at 160, given his size. And I think he would have found similar success even at 168.
But he clearly went off the rails after the Martinez fight.

Beat Andy Lee, almost KO´d Martinez and won a BS, but close decision over Zbik.

did way better than anyone expected.

he would have never got those oppertunities had he not been the son of JCC superstar. the fights that he got, the training, the resources were all in his favour. sergio martinez at the same time was working as a barman in spain trying to wrangle fights. jr had roach in his corner, hbo for his exposure and the WBC swaying things in his favour to give him legitmacy. sergio beats williams, pavlik and dzinzurik the wbc reward him with a diamond belt. but that elevated JCCjr to a world title shot....which all of us here thought he lost.

big puncher...not big enough given his wieght bullying and the most probable use of roids.
chin...could take a punch but again was almost always 18lbs over and when he came across anyone of similar stature was blown away.

spin the question around. why with everything at his back even when he was determined, how come he didnt go further?

He was pretty average and was the beneficiary of every possible edge available in the sport. I remember once when he wasn't on schedule to make weight Bob Arum moved it up a few pounds, shockingly he couldn't make that weight either and Bob just said they'd announce what the contracted weight would be on the morning of the weigh in. Truly pathetic and unprofessional. And he received a gift decision in that fight as well. If I'm not mistaken it was the first fight against Vera.
