I've seen a bunch of his fights against the great fighters from the 60's and 70's but I never saw him get knocked down only losing by TKO's or cuts
For a man who was well under 200 lbs, he had an outstanding chin. But when compared to iron jawed guys who were more natural heavyweights like Tyson or McCall, i would say more of an 8/10. Quarry had a very good chin and while he was stopped primarily by cuts, i do believe he would have been stopped by Ali and Frazier eventually anyway since they did stagger him multiple times and it was only a matter of time before they tko'd him. I don't think he would go down from a single shot by anyone but would he eventually be knocked down by a cumulation of shots? yes. And while Quarry did dominate big hitters like Lyle and Shavers, that had more to do with his overall skill and cleverness than just having a good chin.
Hi Buddy. He had a excellent chin, the only " KO " against him was the dubious one inflicted by Chuvalo, to most it rather looked like Jerry misread or misheard the count, he was my fav of the 70s HWs, and when you consider all that was around then, not least Ali and Frazier, it says alot about his character and demeanor, he was handsome, articulite, and loved to fight, too much so unfortunately, he never lacked courage or heart, in the main only the very best beat him, in almost any other era he could have won a world title of sorts, his health issues and subsequent pugilistic dementia, was a sad and harrowing end to a very fine fighter, should have been a lesson to all, but like many before him it wasn't, Graham Houston the editor of BN back in the early to mid 70s, interviewed him in the dressing room prior to his demolition of Bodell, and was taken back by his pure physical appearance, in particular his very sturdy legs, huge thick forearms, and broad back, set against his rugged Glen Campbell looks, Mailer " Quarry had the type of face to give a marine sergeant pause in a barroom brawl " yes I liked him. stay safe buddy, chat soon. Mike.
