Obviously he used great footwork but it was mostly a toe to toe fight. Because B-Hop knew he was a pretty one dimensional jab right hand fighter and needed space
Alls I can tell you is, on this forum, when people are talking about Hopkins and Martinez, Kelly is an ATG. All other times he's a bum.
Remember that Taylor nearly stopped him 10 years ago in the 2 round. Golovkin, Charlo and Jacobs are very skilled fighter with a huge punch.
I think he was a very good, if not quite great fighter. His personal struggles negatively impacted his career, but he still accomplished a lot. I think Hopkins and Martinez would always have had his number. As some others have said, it's too bad we never got to see Pavlik-Froch at 168, that would've been a great fight.
Depends... When he was undefeated he was trash waiting to be exposed. After losing to Hopkins, he suddenly became a great of yesteryear that would dominate the division today.
beating taylor and taking his zero and then beating him in the rematch was a BIG deal back then. I remember he knocked out this mexican guy, who was about 5'7 at best compared to pavlik's 6'2+. Pretty much sums up most of his career. But beating JT was LEGIT.
Pavlik was a very solid meat and potatoes guy but he seemed to have a low ceiling relative to other MW champions. However, this is the first I've heard of his illness surrounding the Hopkins fight, which would explain things a bit better about his performance that night. Incidentally I still consider the Pavlik Miranda fight one of the most exciting and underrated boxing matches I've ever seen. Literally six rounds of non stop punching from two huge punchers who won't back down. Can't get much better from an action POV.
