I'd like to check that out... Keep my eyes peeled for it... The reason I'm curious is because there are plenty of photos around my gym of my trainer with Laslzo Papp, in their amateur gear - Whether Papp was his partner or his trainer I'm not sure, but I realised just how famous Papp was when I watched a documentary the other day on amateur/olympic boxing - Prior to then I was only aware of his boxrec.com record which didn't make me very intrigued to know more about him. But now that I know just how good he was, I'm gonna be probing my trainer for information on him
He was one of the best Olympic boxers of all time. But it's hard to say good he "could have been" in the pros if he turned pro earlier than he did. He might have been a force in the middleweight division but there's not enough to say one way or the other.
Papp looks superb on film as an amateur which was when he was in his Prime. Had that natural ability and instincts. He was past it when he was allowed to turn pro. I think he would have had a very good chance of becoming a Champion had he been able to turn pro in his prime. I enjoy watching his olympic footage.
Watching a thirty year old adult male who had spent his entire career in international amateur competition while being funded by the soviets competing against actual teenage amateurs who were literally unfunded and only boxing part time tells us nothing about how good Papp was or how he would have done in the pros against top fighters.
