Cley Bey got on my nerves. He had the tools but this guy was always out of shape. He was fat and lazy and only turned pro because of his success in Berlin where he won the Bronze and his excellent amateur credentials. Unfortunately this didnt transfer to the pro`s and he lost decisions to guys like Etienne, got KO`ed against a small heavy Eliecer Castillo and then his career simply faded away after that..
I was a fan of Clay Bey. His advantages were excellent hand speed, good movement when he used it, and great, crisp combination punching. Clay started boxing to lose weight, had a great amateur career, then pretty much had to turn pro. Turned pro late at 32. As a pro, Clay was a spot fighter, would cover up then come out with quick flurries. I think you're just reading his boxrec record. His fight with Etienne stands as one of the best heavyweight fights of the decade. Tremendous give and take in that bout, excellent fight, just short of Liakovich/Brewster. His bouts with Robert Daniels and Sinan Samil Sam were also very good. He really started too late and never could put together a run for a title. Had weight and stamina issues toward the end of his career, but in terms of boxing skill, as naturally talented a heavyweight as you will ever see.
No he was more talented than Audley and a better amateur. His poor conditioning was what routinely let him down.
Negative i watched both those fights but the bottom line is Etienne was a can and a loose cannon. The RING spoke about him highly because he was an all action brawler but he was exposed when he fought Oquendo and badly against a very post prime Tyson.
I didn't say Etienne was a great fighter, I said it was a great fight. That fight was a high caliber action fight and the best that Etienne and Clay-Bey ever looked. Oh, and Clay was much, much better than Harrison. Bad comparison.
he was really quick, i enjoyed watching the guy, he was just out of shape and turned pro too late. From what ive heard is that the guy worked alot of different jobs and wanted to try everything, he is a jack of all trades
Good but not great. He KO'd Nate Tubbs who KO'd Sanders in one round. Top 30 heavyweight at his best. He beat and lost to some respectable names. He had talent but never fully lived up to his potential as a pro.
