How good was Mac Foster ?

The first ever fighter I've seen to retire with a 100% knockout percentage in his record (30W-30KOs). Not much footage of him, in his fight with Quarry and Ali he looks kinda stiff, very uncoordinated and sometimes sloppy. Idk.. he looks pretty much like an average fighter to me. Someone I think Shavers would win 5 out of 5 times if they met and Tbh, I would favour Norton heavily if they met too.

Probably just a Ron Stander level type fighter. Nothing more than that.

 

Quarry did rave about his power.

Stand Ward a 4-2 (or something) guy ended his career. Ward actually was quite the brave fighter he took on Mike Weaver three times and won once lost an MD to Lyle lost to Greg Page and Cotzee (spelling?) and fought some other guys like Leroy Codwell etc. look into him interesting career.

 

He was trained by Pat Difuria, and used to spar a lot with his stablemate Wayne Thornton. Difuria was close with the Dundees and other New York guys. I have a friend that came out of the same gym in Fresno.

 

He wasn't much good. Not a serious contender, though he was touted as such for a while. Never beat anyone current or relevant and lost when he stepped up.

 

His name was Stan Ward. Foster was also on an ill-advised comeback after retiring following a three month losing streak. He was never quite the same after the Quarry bout.

 

Typo. I didn’t call it an impressive win.

 

Showed promise but failed to step up when faced with serious opposition.

Decent jab, great power, kinda stiff.

 

Stan is from Sacramento. He sparred with Foreman, Frazier, Holmes all the big name guys during the 70s.

Mac Foster's competition was from the mixed company variety, Jerry Quarry, Stan Ward, a past his prime Cleveland Big Cat Williams and Muhammad Ali.

 

Mac Foster was a 70s version of Alex Stewart but more durable and perhaps a bit more power. Like Stewart, looked good against fringe contenders/past it guys like an old Big Cat Williams, Thad Spencer, Zora Folley, Bepe Ros but lacked the overall skills to compete above that level. Only Quarry (on one of his better nights) beat him inside the distance.
