undefeated up until the dreaded tyson fight and twice a winner over larry holmes, how good was spinks?
Michael Spinks is an ATG. One of the greatest light-heavyweights ever. He was very versatile, as he could punch with power and box awkwardly as well. He took out Marvin Johnson with one of the greatest uppercuts ever thrown. He used his awkward boxing style and active jab to outbox a terrific swarmer in Dwight Qawi and Larry Holmes (the first fight was a fair decision, the rematch should've went to Larry). Spinks went undefeated in one of the top 175 lb. eras ever, beating guys like Johnson, Qawi, Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, Yaqui Lopez, and the Davis brothers. As a heavyweight, he was merely good. The win over Holmes was impressive though. Although Holmes was past his prime, he was still the undefeated recognized linear champ, and the smaller Spinks was able to outbox, outhustle, and even outjab Holmes to a win.
I see you're from Pittsburg, hometown of James Page. Loved that left hook he threw to take out Pestriaev.
Not much more to be said. One of the best LHW's of all time in a stacked LHW era, and proved his ability by moving up to HW and beating the best HW of the era(though past his prime, and the second fight was somewhat of a robbery). Very awkward style, but brutal power. I'd have liked to have seen him against Matthew Saad Muhammad.
