Reviewing the 60's welterweights, Jr. Middies (now), and middleweights, you find a slew of great, near great, and good fighters in a never ending Friday Night Fights round robin with each other. Some had a style that could beat one guy, but not the other guy.

Joey Archer seems to be one over time who has slipped in oblivion, even though for about 18 months he was right at the top...but just couldn't get past Emile Griffith to take the title.

Archer falls into that category of very , very good but not great imo. Maybe similar to Billy Graham? I don't use the word great very often ,for me it's thrown around too freely.

A beautiful boxing middleweight along the lines of Joey Giardello and the type of style that should mean a long career unlike the sluggers.

T, Joey Archer was a very good defensive boxer like a poor man's version of Billy Graham, but not to be compared to Joey Giardello who when the situation demanded was a very hard and accurate puncher
capable of flooring anybody he hit...Joey Archer most likely retired at a young age knowing as he slowed up, he didn't have the firing power to
compensate for his slower speed due to aging...

Excellent post bb...I think you nailed it. All Joey needed was a punch.

    Cheers for that burt.
its only the last few years, what with YouTube etc etc that I've been able to see a lot of the fighters I'd only read about.
When I saw giardellos fight with Carter I thought "hey, I used to do that side stepping on the ropes too"
Obviously as a mere amateur I was only a pale imitation of the great Joey but it didn't half make my day.
I'd been showing the kids the same feints with your feet and getting your opponent bamboozled into going the wrong way.

Jeez yeah he was protected fighting stumblebums, such as Don Fullmer, twice, Jose Gonzalez, twice, Denny Moyer, Blair Richardson, Victor Salazar, Rubin Carter, Holly Mims, **** Tiger, and Emile Griffith twice. If that was protected, I would hate to see thrown to the wolves.

Uhhh, yeah, look at the decisions that went to him new york that should have gone the other way. Go back and watch his fights were he spoils and throws pitty pat punches and still gets the decision and tell me he wasnt protected. Besides outside of griffith and tiger who were these monsters he beat. Its not like don fullmer, carter, salazar et all were world beaters and galf those guys you listed he got gifts against.

Oh, please you're like an old bitter lady always nitpicking. he was a boxer with no power that type tend to get decisions that are considered robberies or could have gone either way. Everybody on that lineup were solid guys nobody implied or said they were "monsters". I would say they were good solid fighters Carter at the time was feared, Gonzalez was a dirty rough-tough fighter, Holly Mims, another bum, with many losses. Give the white boy some credit for stepping in with those guys, is all I am saying, jeez. Knowing you, you will comeback with some cowpatty's to justify your position.

Holly mims, exactly, mims beat him and got robbed. Go watch that fight. I dont have to come back with anything except to tell you to get your glasses and go watch those fights. He *****ed and moaned about losing decisions to griffith and gonzalez but damn near every contender he beat came about via controversial hometown decisions. It was no secret archer was protected in ny. You act like that is just coming out of left field when its been said over and over since he was actually an active fighter. Yeah, god forbid i actually shed a little light on a spoiler whose entire game was built around hearing the final bell so he could get the preferential treatment from the judges that he was unwilling or unable to bring about during the fight by his fists. He was the john ruiz of his day. Run run pitty pat grab run run. Go back and see what all of his contemporaries said about him. Griffith hated his guts because of his whining. He talked and talked prior to Griffith-Tiger to the point that Griffith actualky, on his own initiative, walked into teddy brenners office and offered to fight archer in an eliminator for the title despite ALREADY HAVING A SIGNED TITLE SHOT with tiger. Jimmy archer acting as joeys brother was called and agreed. Guess who ducked that fight within 24 hrs. Joey. After their second title fight Griffith offered to fight joey a third time to shut him up for good. Guess who declined and retired. Joey. Guess he got frustrated when the judges finally stopped handing him decisions.
