Yeah I’ve never got where this “Hamed was competitive” narrative came from. I watched it live and Barrera absolutely schooled and humiliated him. I thought it was a near shutout at the time but watching it a couple of times since I see it like you did. Hamed won two and a couple were close (Barrera was coasting in some of those rounds too) but other than that MAB was in complete control. It’s a leap of absolute faith based on that to see a bout between these two fighters ever going Hamed’s way at any point in his career imo.
You have to admit though, that you, as well as everyone else if they’re honest, thought that he would beat Barrera, and win the rematch if it happened? He had such an allure that he fooled the masses into believing he was better than he was. It’s also noticeable that Marco, although the victor, was a mere cameo role in the whole event.
It was one of them subliminal twelve round cameos where you only just notice, if you keep a close eye, that he repeatedly smashed a bat-eared imbecile flush in the clock for 36 minutes. I'd pay some good wonga for that turnbuckle and create a shrine around it.
I did think Hamed would win going in but I realised pretty quick during the fight that MAB was giving him fits and it only got worse and more humiliating as the rounds went by. After that I knew Hamed was never winning a rematch with Barrera. He was a full level below plus I knew his confidence would be in tatters after the reality that he wasn’t close to the best fighter on the planet set in. His whole persona was built around supreme self belief and arrogance and they’re was no way to manufacture that again after the drubbing he got. The crap perforce in his “comeback” fight with Calvo showed that his heart was gone.
Ya. Correct me I I am wrong but I believe Hamed moved up to 126 just about the same time Jones was moving up from 122.
I took it that it was a shame he never faced Roy, not Junior, Jones. Preferably in 2003 but not sure Naz would have made LHW at that point.
Fast and very hard hitting fighter .unfortunately went power mad and stopped training properly . Never reached his full potential unfortunately. Has got a right chub on since retiring who ate all pies ??
His power was terrific and real .. he was a colorful character in the Macho Camacho type of mold but the Morales fight proved he was a notch below the top of a talented era .. he lacked the desire , commitment and focus .. made too much money without having to fight the top guys and got out ..
He was very dynamic and unorthodox. Punched like a mule kicks . Very fast. But better in his mind than he actually was.
Eddie, you don't never want to know how I'd treat that turnbuckle. I'm saying no more because I don't want electronically tagging again.
I just hope the cornermen wipe the canvas around it before any fight resumes. I can almost hear the ref sending you back to the corner telling them to wipe some of that vaseline off.
