Get real. All you have to do is watch one of Oscar's first fights to realize he was something special. A skinny lightweight knocking guys out like Tyson did when he came up.
I saw Oscar win the Gold at the Olympics and watched his thrilling rise through the ranks. I was in my teens and tried to see each of his fights on TV live. I caught most of them and ones i missed I now have on video. Every one of his fights and many amateur. I've seen all of his controversial fights many times. Pernell/Oscar WIN Quartey/Oscar WIN Tito/Oscar WIN Mosley/Oscar 1 LOSS Mosley/Oscar 2 WIN Sturm/Oscar LOSS
Oscar was the reason I took an interest in boxing again, watched tyson vs lewis, was very upset by tyson losing then a while later a friend shows me these pressconferences of oscar vs vargas, After that fight rooted big time for Oscar especially vs floyd and mayorga. But since losing to floyd I think less and less of him, escpecially since he is a dirty promoter nowadays. But as a boxer his 90's career is very impressive, beat trinidad as well so he was basically undefeated allthough you could give pea or quartey a W. I think he is an atg but his resume is very different on paper then how it should be.
See, I don't get how anyone can give Pernell or Quartey that win. Quartey was on his ass twice, got outpunched, and destroyed in the final round. He did knock Oscar down and win a few rounds but Oscar simply did more to him. With Pernell, Oscar forced the fight, throwing more and landing more power shots. Pernell didn't do nearly enough to win the fight. You can't dance and goof around and expect to win a fight. The most meaninful shots were landed by Oscar. pernell would just land one jab at a time.
I think both fights were close enough to go either way, I had quartey winning 114-113 vs oscar (bazooka's jab along with oscar showing great heart, rounds 6 and 12 were awesome) Oscar beating pernell by one point the last time I watched it, both fights could easily have been draws imo, not weird if anyone have him losing those fighst then.
Draws I can understand, I guess. Had Oscar not knocked quartey down and just won the round then I had a draw. Had Oscar lost the 12th, Quartey wins by a point.
Yeah thats what I mean, its so close I wouldnt mind anyone having oscar winning closely but 116-112 was a little wide for me.
I dont get how ****** ppl here say Oscar never won the big fights when he beat Chavez, Whitaker, Vargas, Quartey? I'm tired of hearing Chavez is a shot fighter bs. If Chavez was a shot fighter, he wouldnt won 6 in a row before facing Oscar if it was against bum fighters or not. Whitaker was clearly not a shot fighter and was consider either the number 1 p4p or top 3 p4p before Oscar fought him. Quartey was considering a dangerous opponent for Oscar cause of his style in which he got an awesome jab. Yea most say Oscar lost to Whitaker and Quartey but Oscar in most ppl eyes beat Trinidad and Mosley rematch so either way Oscar has won big fights regardless.
He beat Tito. Mosley was roided. Received gifts in less important fights eg Sturm. Would clean out the current division in his prime, FMJ included. Consider, PBF fought Oscar and barely won, an Oscar that was way past prime. He is a bit of a golden girl tho.
I believe Oscar is an atg. He had the boxing skills and heart to beat anyone head to head. Good record great determination. Great jab and left hook. He was it in his day. And he was a fighter who truly had passion for the game. My personal favorite performance is DeLahoya Vargas. Called the most satisfying win of his career it showed what he was made of. Prime Delahoya especially at lightweight is a beast. it would take a special fighter having a special nnight to beat a prime oscar
De la hoya was a great fighter some people think he is an overated golden boy, the only time he has ever been dominated in a fight was against Pacquiao at the end of his career and weight drained. Other than that, Trinidad loss close and controversial and chose to step of the pedal due to corner instructions, Mosley 1 SD loss, Mosley 2 controversial, Hopkins fight KO with single body shot up until then wasn't out of the fight ahead on on one judges scorecard, lost to Mayweather by Split decision the best fighter in the world at the time. so you get the picture this guy was never outclassed by any fighter he faced. and had a very good chin when have you ever seen him wobble from a punch? the only fighter to properly beat a prime De la hoya was Shane Mosley in their first fight, which makes you realise what an awesome fighter Mosley was in his prime before he detoriated, it's a shame he never became a box office star because in his prime he could of probably defeated anyone in his weight class.
Prime Oscar would own Floyd Mayweather.. That's how good he was. Beating Whitaker, Chavez, Camacho, fighting a roided up Mosley n Vargas, putting out a brilliant display of boxing against Trinidad, moving up to middleweight to fight Sturm n Hopkins took a toll on him but this guy is a legendary warrior and an all time great.
Yea, I remember even Arum commented how stupid Oscar was in that Mosley fight saying he was paying more attention to his singing then training and how he fought a stupid fight, giving the fight to Mosley. Had Oscar of Boxed smart like he had prior to that he would have beaten SHane same way he beat him the 2nd fight.
