way overrated, one of the best entertainers and reason why the lower weight classes had so much hype and viewers back then though.
Very good, was some big fights he 'aledgidly' ducked like juan manuel marquez in 2000, and morales in 01....but still very good, wont be emulated anytime soon i dont think
cant deny the man brought lots of viewership to boxing and created new fans though. same can be said about Broner due to his ignorance and arrogance lots of american fans love the hype especially pre Paulie, I remember how much WSHH was pushing that fight, and how friends all over the world who dont watching boxing were asking me about the fight though. broner was the bigger hypejob, but both these guys contributed in a handful of new fans no doubt.
Great fighter but still a mystery of why he decided to call it quits at the age of 28. Successful career indeed but when he lost to barrera I believe everything went down hill from there. Could you imagine that this guy could of have fights with marquez, pacquiao and a rematch with barrera but I guess we will never find out.
Great points. Would have been some great fights. Maybe he didnt like the feeling of being punked vs MAB.
I always felt he was always a natural bantam, looked chunky at 126, but still carried his speed and power very well. His unorthodox style helped him tremendously along with his power, no doubt the most entertaining of his era. Beat respectable names, obviously taking on MAB huge step up and not mentally strong enough for a prime Barrera.
What's crazy is that he was a heavy favorite in that fight and thought he could show boat against Barrera and ended getting his ass handed to him. He probably felt ashamed and embarrassed and after that he pretty much lost all his sponsorships. The aura and hype around his was over and people wasn't buying into act no more. I guess with that feeling he decided to hang it up avoid more humiliation from the public.
He very clearly lost by a decent margin to the only guy on his resume I have ever heard of, so he seems overrated to me.
Had naseem did not quit and fought hard his whole career, where would he rank? A great champ in his weight class? Why was he so popular and why did he quit? Could've he been more popular than pacquiao?
He was very popular in the UK. I don't think a lot of North Americans thought too highly of him. He had a big personality but I personally found him irritating. He would have had to move up a couple divisions to be huge. Look at Roman...dude is all kinds of excellent but only hardcore fans know who he is. Just my opinion though.
Completely overrated. Never beat a great fighter. Beat a whole bunch of pretty good but nothing special alphabet belt holders (which is exactly wrong with boxing and will be for awhile, lol)who were either nothing special or past their best. MAB made him look like the rank amateur that he was as he relied on his power, speed, reflexes and unorthodox style to get by again limited opposition. He might have had the lowest IQ of any so called elite fighter that I have ever seen. It's actually hilarious how simply Barrera outboxed him as all he did was maintain a disciplined game plan lol. But all of his apologists make all of the excuses for him. Cheers lol
