He gets raked over the coals here alot. I honestly think because he lost to Marciano and the Marciano detractors try to act like he wasn't much. But Layne seemed to be a pretty good contender in his day. Thoughts?
Within just two years of turning pro Rex Layne compiled a record of 34-1-2-24 and some of those wins included Joe Walcott, Cesar Brion, Turkey Thompson, Bob satterfield and Dave Whitlock. Reversely his career may not have finished as well as it started but I don’t think there are too many fighters who did that well in their first two years in the sport unless we’re talking about Joe Louis, Mike Tyson and a select few others. It seems that after he took back to back beating from Marciano and Charles that his career took a step back and he wasn’t as good. Of course fighting as actively as he did and so early on I imagine that could ruin a fighter. Overall I think he was a very good contender.
Fair assessment. Layne wasn't as bad as he's made out to be. Actually, like you said, a good contender
He also has that disputed win against Charles, based on Dempsey, the ref, throwing the fight his way. I am not saying that it was a fair win, but it stands in history as a win. Yeah, very good fighter who gets detracted a lot by Marciano haters.
Layne had a heavy right hand and was strong and aggressive while young and fresh. He racked up some good wins but his no defense face first style always burns out quick. You take a lot of punishment all the time from good fighters you are going to become a dull weapon fast so to speak. So good early on but past it pretty quick. Marciano did him no favors either lol
I always love how people are so willing to just toss out as fact that Layne got a gift decision against Charles without ever having seen that fight. Ive seen it and while Dempseys scorecard sucked (only because he had so many even rounds) ultimately the right guy won and by the margin that Dempsey had on his card.
Dempsey was the promoter of the match. He promoted many fights and usually sets himself up as referee. Jack was a will known gambler and that alone would prohibit him from being a referee in many states. NBA would not permit it, NYABC is another case that would. Arcel got his head busted for exposing such shenanigans.
They say that the candle that burns twice as bright, also melts twice as quickly. That it drips to the floor of the maestro's house and the family dog steps in it and it solidifies into dog paw art, and that the dog who steps in the wax has a yuck residue of success, ever agitating him or her into paw-licking and fidgeting, spinning in circles, unable to sleep, thirsty, drinking water and scratching at the door (of life) all night. They say that the dog will randomly plow other dogs missionary style, and that onlookers will be disturbed and disgusted to see this unnatural thing. They say that the style of a missionary is a style of hardship and frustration-mostly for others. They say that missionaries are often disturbing and disgusting, but you discuss things that are disgusting, but you feel so very empty without them. Is Layne disgusting? Is that why we are discussing him? Is he a candle in the wind? Being blown quickly and left without the heat and light that candles are practically known for, in their most candle-like form? Did his teeth ever grow back, after Marciano? Did they grow in his mouth or in some other weirder place? Is it true that Al Weill had an illegitimate sister who he pimped out to Layne? These are lies, most likely created to shut down this thread and confuse all of Layne's detractors and fans alike. Every one of them. This represents thousands of people.
More bull****. Dempsey was not the promoter. Ken Mayne was. Ray Arcel got his head busted because he was promoting televised boxing shows on a rival network from the IBC shows which were being fed mob fighters. The mob was trying to stifle competition. Try harder next time.
