Why did Bowe look exceptional against Gonzalez? If you watch the full telecast you see that Bowe was primed , motivated and determined both mentally and physically to put a whopping on Gonzalez like no other. This content is protected Im not sure if this has been seen cos it was uploaded recently , but it shows why Bowe was so savage in that fight. This is the same fired up and motivated Bowe that would have turned up against Lewis two years earlier... Lewis in 93 was too green as a pro to deal with a guy who in that form was the best and most complete SHW of all time. Bowe would have been unbeatable if he had that mindset for his whole career instead of just particular fights. But boxing is a mental game and Bowe just didn't have it in that department.
Faded Holyfield didn't make Lewis look like an ATG. Bowe looked like an ATG against the best Evander that ever entered the ring is more accurate. There hasn't been a better win at HW since Bowe vs Holyfield I
Ok. Out of the ATGs, tell me who do you think beats him prime vs prime. Remember, we're comparing the best versions of each fighter H2H, not who has greater achievements
Good comments from all sides regarding Bowe. I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle regarding his greatness but one thing is for sure, he was his own worst enemy and he had the talent to accomplish so more than what he did. He will forever be rightfully judged for throwing his belt away and not facing Lewis in the pro's. All that said, his skill and talent are without question.
Whatever their skills sets both Butler and Cooper hit like a train, to deny that is just downright unconsciable stubborness.
I don't deny that, but you need to land to make any effect on opponent. They just weren't good enough fighters to praise Bowe for beating them. Come on, it's clear that he ducked top tier punchers.
He was one of the ATGs...for just one night, against Holyfield. Though, as mentioned many times above, he took way too many shots, he had courage and heart to spare, a brutal punch, and a great jab (probably second tier below Liston, Ali, Louis, and Holmes, but still terrific). Holyfield was in his prime, and his prime was pretty awe-inspiring. All nit-picking aside, I seriously doubt Lewis, Tyson, or Foreman could have beaten either man that night. They were the best heavies in the world that particular date. Just my humble opinion. He was never the same after, threw everything away along with the belt. Very dumb.
Had a lot of natural gifts and talent but never lived up to his potential. He never seemed to have the work ethic and discipline . Imagine him with Holyfield's work ethic - he would have been one scary fighter.
