How good was Roy Jones?

RJ's full-of-himself, MEAN 'n a showman blessed with outta this world skillz 'n reflexes, but he's a CALCULATING improviser, b.

SRR's record speaks for itself, but beyond his gleaming grill 'n self-effacing facade, he was Anton Chigurh in trunks.

 

Certainly not his record, b; and despite being a personal favorite, I keep an open mind, if someone better comes along.

 

No film of what? There's a fair amount of Robinson in his prime, and has been for a while. I figured pretty much everyone was well aware of this by now.

 

as one of roy jones' biggest supporters, especially on the classic, i wanna jump in with what i hope is a semi-objective analysis...

otherworldly talent, almost no proper boxing technique to speak of

resume is full of goods but very few greats

even the few chances he took were so calculated that they'll always be subject to scrutiny

top 10 all time great talent but the absence of true challenges make any top 50 ranking reasonable

 

Top 10 for me, I can think of few 160 or 168lb fighters that I'd even give a chance of beating him in his prime. The guy was 35 years old before he even had a close fight, and that was after moving from 160 to HW and back down to LHW again.

People are way too harsh on Jones, he beat the best out there in his weight classes at the time with the exception of DM, and anyone that thinks DM could have beaten Jones please feel free to point out how he'd have done it, I could do with a laugh.

Definately the best fighter of my lifetime, shame he's sunk so low now but I'll never forget the highs.

It amazes me that a man that took risks like Hopkins and Toney when he was still a relative pup gets so much stick for his reign at LHW when he beat everyone there was to beat, at a weight he didn't really belong at in the first place :huh

He wins the HW title and gets even more abuse for fighting a crap champion....yet the Klitschko fans bang on about their boys being ATG's even though one lost to Lewis and the other one avoided him like the plague :huh Of course Jones avoided Lewis too, but can you ****ing blame him?

People on here big up the likes of Slappy Joe and Hopkins yet **** on Jones, it's truly ******ed. Slappy avoided the **** out of Jones until he was a shell and Hopkins lost to a green Jones badly yet somehow the myth has been created that Hopkins was the one that was green in that fight :rofl:rofl:rofl

Whatever. Certain people on here rank Hopkins at a certain place in MW history, all I'll say is wherever you rank Bernard, Jones has to be higher. I've got him top 10 ATG as he was the best fighter of his generation without a doubt. Better than DLH, better than Mosley, better than Trinidad, better than Lewis, better than Tyson, better than Holy...do I really need to go on?

it's the resume that ****s people over. i had him top 10 all time in my last list. skills wise, greatest fighter i've ever seen. but with 5 or so fights, there would be no dispute he's a top 10 all time.

agree on the short term memories...if you look at the resume of a lot of all time great fighters, they're filled with one or two greats and a lot of filler

****, i love aaron pryor but he beat faded versions of cervantes and arguello and i've seen him put above jones

 

Sugar Ray Leonard constantly gets put above Jones on ATG lists too. Take a look at their careers and come back and tell me how Leonards is more impressive?

Short answer is that it isn't. Jones never lost in his prime for a start. Not legitimately at least. And definately not to a man that was naturally lighter than him, hell Jones spent his entire career fighting guys that were naturally bigger than him yet still got hated on. Bear in mind that after 40 fights Jones had a KO percentage that was similar to Tysons....

I find so called fight fans odd at times, and judging Roy Jones career is one of those times, seriously.

 

jones is definitely one of those holmes type fighters that will be much more appreciated in 5 or 10 years.

160-h2h, top 5 all time

168-h2h best ever and even the work he did warrants top 10 placement

175-top 10 all time

in 5 years lost MAYBE 25 rounds in total on all judges scorecards. did things no fighter, ever, has done.

Hard to **** on him, no matter how many mandos he fought

 

Great fighter, one of the fastest fighters ever in boxing history. Great power in both hands. Could throw 4 left hooks in under a second. Great reflexes. Roy Jones was the first Middleweight in over 100 years to win the Heavyweight belt. Roy just about dominated every fighter he faced in his prime. Defeated the likes of Bernard Hopkins, Jorge Castro, Montell Griffin, Clinton Woods, Eric Harding, Virgil Hill, John Ruiz, Merqui Sosa, Antonio Tarver, James Toney, Reggie Johnson, Thulani Malinga etc...

Roy Jones is an All Time Great. He warrants a ranking around the Top 40 mark.
