Before I discovered the internet, I never would have imagined these guys having fans that would favor them over all time greats and proclaim them uncrowned Champions. They only lost to the best....and Bentt, and Bonecrusher...etc.
Logic dictates that this one isn't going the distance. Something has to give, one of these men has to find a way to win. Look for the unexpected, Morrison and Bruno are both weary of the others power and box cautiously. Against willing sparring partners like Old Foreman and McCall, this was their prefered tactic, pile up points and don't get knocked out. Neither man is going to press the issue. Bruno by disputed split decison in a stinker. :good ...or perhaps a draw.
I actually see a carbon copy of the Tyson/Bruno '89 fight, but with more knockdowns on each man. Both men come out, Morrison comes out aggressive and catches Bruno off guard for a flash knockdown. Bruno gets up and rocks Morrison. Morrison goes down from one punch and recovers but is on funny legs. Bruno is a poor finisher, along with Morrisons heart, Morrison survives the round, barely. Bruno looks semi decent in round 2, using his jab and trying to move a bit. Morrison is quiet and still recovering from the KD in the first, near the end of the round he starts throwing lots of bombs and theyre hurting Frank. Bruno is tiring. And rounds 3-5 continue with Brunos stamina and will waning and Morrison getting stronger (or at least being stronger willed than Bruno). Morrison finishes Bruno on the ropes.
Tommy is an underrated fighter due to his lack of a chin . Hes a very respectable fighter , with a wicked left hook and great power .
Tommy Morrison was better than your average club fighter, but probably topped out at about fringe level. His family name, crowd pleasing style, good looks, and fighting often are what got him on the map. As a prospect he was carefully matched against men who complemented his style and were easy to dispatch. He had the tools to compete in professional boxing but was never destined for the world scene. The George Foreman win was his moment in the sun and that was largely due to him changing his style for one night against a rather lethargic opponent. All in all, he was fun to watch and raised a few eye brows from time to time. I used to think that he might have been a champion or solid top contender had he fought in a weaker era. But then looking at the michael Bentt loss, the Purity draw, and the close calls against Joe Hipp and an aged Truth Williams, I pretty much think the man was born for fringe.
Tommy Morrison was trained in the peekaboo style of Mike Tyson even the number system was employed by his trainer Tommy virgets. His biggest flaw was his roundhouse punching once Mercer was able to establish-blocking he begin countering those windmill punches.with his own left hooks.in the same way that Riddick Bowe was countered by holyfield's left hooks knocking bow down.
Layne survives an early knockdown and rapes Morrison. Satterfield fight all over and again. And Satterfield whips Morrison too.
