he was at his best prior to his loss to trinidad then again prior to de la hoya.

now he beat Luis Campas, Raul Marquez, Winky Wright, Ike Quartey, Wilfredo Rivera and Javier Castillejo. He had a very exciting style and invariably knocked out, or got knocked out.

A lot of people said Trinidad exposed him, but with his victories i think he should be credited a bit.

he got in the ring with trinidad, mayorga, de la hoya and mosley. He only lost to the best.

Admittedly his peak dint last long, couple of years at best.

But still i think he should go down as a very decent champion, not elite level, but certainly no journeyman!

Great fighter! Not an ATG obviously as he didn't do enough!

His balls to the wall fight against Tito was outstanding and although I wanted Oscar to kick his ass I always respected him.

I had the pleasure of watching his final fight against Mayorga in LA live and it was a great time. I wish he'd won it!:?

There's two ways to judge him: based on what he ACHIEVED and based on the POTENTIAL he had. He was a good fighter that had the makings of a GREAT fighter. He was involved in a golden era of a glory division with some GREAT fighters in Mosely and Trinidad.

People say he was rushed into the Trinidad fight, and that is TRUE. With more experience/maturity he could have won or at worst, lost a close decision.

So depending on how you look at it, Vargas is rated as a good champion and a good fighter, with a good resume and some good wins. BUT HE COULD HAVE BEEN GREAT.

i agree, the thing is tho, as i said his peak was over too quickly in the space of 3 years he had 4 wars resultin in ko losses so it's hard to say how good he could've been with a better defence.

the one criticism is there where claims of roid use, dunno if it ever got verified or not?

He has wins over Quartey and Wright (I thought Wright won) and he gave Trinidad a great fight when he was barely old enough to buy a ****in beer.

    Slight exageration dude!

good fighter bit arogant but trinidad ruined him never the same fighter after the beating he took cause vagas used get into wars and it does affect a fighter hes finished anyway no hall ov famer and no journeyman he got lucky against winky aswell i think he lost that fight your average champion who fought some big names and lost lol simple as that

Hate him because of arrogant attitude despite big losses. If youre going to act like Floyd and be a douche bag, you better be great like Floyd at the very minimum.

And Im talking about Vargas being an ass blood outside the ring promotions too. I witnessed him vs a casino manager several years ago when he went into a tirade when he was drunk at a craps table. He started spouting off "Do you know who I am?" and saying that type of ****. I wish the manager would have said "Ya, I know who you are. You're a 2bit second rate champion thats gotten his ass kicked in big fights". He was allowed to stay too, which was even more shitty. He should have gotten the boot. I guess thats the big perk of being "Vargas".
