for beating one guy, the fat guy doesn't deserve a ton of credit, but if he beat several great fighters, that's different.
The Willie Meehan - Jack Dempsey fights were originally labeled exhibitions to raise money for equipment and the war effort; is this true? I read it on another thread.
However much of a joke Meehan May or may not have been viewed as at times, and whether he started at 15 as a flyweight or however Phat he was, and however much of an anomoly he was.... The facts of the matter are that Meehan was good enough (whether through awkwardness, slipperiness, toughness, or sheer bloody minded annoyingness!?) to have taken Sam Langford 4 rounds and beat him in doing it!? He also 'beat' Dempsey famously over 4 rounds in an exhibition for the navy relief fund!? He also held Billy Miske even over the 4 rounds and big Harry Wills couldn't put him away in the 4 round limit either?? He beat Jeff Clark over the 4-rounders aswell and held George Christian to a draw over 6? He BEAT Jack Dillon (!!??) over 6 rounds!!?? And took Greb & Brennan the 6 rounds aswell? To prove it was no fluke he also took Harry Greb 10 rounds aswell!? And reportedly was never in any danger of being stopped by Harry? Miske was also fooled over 10 aswell as was Frankie Mantell!? Infact most the fringe contenders of the era seemed to be gettin their 10-rounders in with Meehan, including George Christian (who was held to a draw), Bert Kenny, Andre Anderson etc Tom Cowler, who beat (and gave a boxing lesson) to Bill Brennan a bunch of times, couldn't drop or stop Meehan and had to settle for a 12 round decision? Charley Weinert also was stumpt over 12 rounds and Martin Burke was taken the 15 round limit aswell? Meehan even won the 'Pacific Coast Heavyweight title' over 4 rounds from Al Norton!?? Meehan was slippery customer to the extreme! Ask any of those guys?
