A pretty rare, perhaps unique, thing to go 3-0 with one of the top fighters in a divisions history. Is there any reason to claim they were less great than at first look? Only one of them, the second, was close in the end, even though Moore reportedly had Charles in bad trouble before being KO'd in their final fight. The first was a wide decision win for Charles. But Moore matured late. Any reason to claim he wasn't yet in his prime in the late 40's? How do these wins stack against the top 3 wins of other fighters? Anyone who tops them?
I don’t think Moore was peaking in his late 40s. In fact he was right around 48 when he lost to Cassius Clay in the second to last fight of his career. He was much younger when he fought Charles and in both of their natural best division. To address the thread topic, Though I’ve never seen footage of any of their fights, I think they were certainly exceptional wins. Moore is a pound for pound giant in my opinion as well as a deity at light heavy. Charles going 3-0 against him has to be one of boxing’s better achievements.
As a collection? No. No one has 3 wins over a top 10 ATG in their prime. Moore was absolutely prime, especially for the 2nd two and Charles dominated him in the series. Moore peaked from 47-49, that's when his best performances, winning streaks and (some) wins are. He also looks amazing on the film we have from there. They really do define his career at LHW; everything that Moore did enhanced Charles' résumé.
Something to think about. Arguably, Charles and Moore are the 2 greatest lightheavies ever and are 2 legitimate atgs. The facts that they fought in the same stacked era and against each other 3 times are mindboggling.
Can't think of many other times it's happened. Pep vs Saddler is the only one. Robinson vs Gavilán (at a push?)
Ali Frazier 1 perhaps. But I wouldn't rate Joe p4p as highly as I do Charles and Moore. And the other 2 fights occured when they were clearly past it although the Thrilla was insane.
I meant more guys regarded as the best two best in their division. I don't think it's happened much at all. Cervantes vs Benítez? Chang vs Zapata?
