Its hard to tell really, we havent seen enough of him at LHWT never mind cruiser. If he fights smartly & uses his speed & boxing ability, in & out, unleashing a big bomb every now & then just to keep the cruiser guessing then I dont see no reason why he couldnt beat most of them, after all, Pernell Whitaker showed us that you dont need to have power to move up the weights, as long as you are more talented than the bigger guy + fight the smartest fight & can take a punch should 1 or 2 get thru then its in your own hands to throw away IMO. There is no 190 lber in the world that is in Calzaghe`s class skillwise so I wouldnt bet huge on his opponent despite the size difference. As FMJ keeps reminding us.... skills pay the bills.
Contend but he better not get caught...hed probably come in about 178 facing a guy thats 199--he would have to box and move all night and win on points like he always does anyways...hes never really knocked out a quality opponent at 168 or 175 so he wouldnt do it at 176-200 either
macranelli would give us an idea, but in reality he is way to small. the gap from light heavy is 25lb with the cruiser cutting weight. and some cruisers are big barstards , looking like heavy`s. calzaghe simply does not have the body frame to be a dominant 200lb champ.
There may not be a 190lber with the skills, but cruisers weigh in at 200 lb and in some cases fight at 220 so i cannot see JC beating any top cruiserweight. He has struggled with the transition to LHW imo its no coincidence that he was dropped twice in 44 fights then twice in 2 at the higher weight.
Pacman... you underrate Calzaghe`s power, he might not be known as a big puncher but he is a pro boxer, not a 15 yr old child, his punch must be respected as should everyone`s. Im not saying the cruiser would get KOd, dropped or even wobbled but if you box a guy that is boxing circles round you with fast pitty pat punches, you can get into the mould of just accepting those shots, increasing your pressure & abandoning your defence... now, throw a big bomb with plenty behind it square on the button every now & then & you can bet your ass that your gonna disturb his rhythm... AT THE VERY LEAST... then back to boxing his unsettled out of rhythm slow ass off again, frustrating him. Its not rocket science but it does require a reasonable skill gap between the combatants aswell as a lot of focus - which neither would be a problem for Calzaghe. Botswana :smoke
well he has sparre with Enzo Mac quite a few times. Be did mention that cause enzo hit so hard he had to move around alot more and try not to be a stationary target. The main problem is that calzaghe's been getting taggewd alot of late if a true cruiser hit him with 10ounce gloves like Cunningham I dont see him getting up. Also someone like mormeck would give him nightmares with his punch power and his bullying tactics. With someone like mormeck you need some sort of power to keep him off i.e David Haye (so he can respect you). With Calzaghe's hands i dont think he'd be able to
I think he has the talent to beat certain title holders, Fraggo the wbc champ for example I think Joe could comfortable out point over 12. But i dont think his style goes well for a multi weight champ, he is a counter puncher but a very aggressive one, he also doesnt have a large frame like a Jones or a Toney, plus he isnt even a power puncher at 175, at 200lb it would be non existant.
his power is just enough so that SMW's and LHW's will not walk through him and them punches are not every time they are once in a flurry. JC walks around less than 200 in off season so would need to bulk up which he has never done in his career he does not do weights or anything. at cruiser he would just be fat and would not have the speed that he got at 168-175 and would not be able to throw people around which is a attribute that gets overlooked JC has been in the ring with some big strong men but it is JC hat does all the muscling and pushing about. The only way JC would win at cruiser is against a man with no power so JC can beat him for the UD. also the power up at 200 would be another level. yes JC spars with enzo who has great power but in sparing enzo is not throwing bombs at jc's chin trying to knock him out
His style is not suited for that high a jump in weight. He'd either have to add too much muscle and lose some of the speed necessary for him to be elusive and sneak in punches, or he'd be too out of shape to sustain the output level he'd need to go 12 high-paced rounds.
He would be able to beat most of the top fifty cruisers. Whether he could deal with any of the top five or ten is another question.
