I was just watching some old McClellan fights...man that guy was fun to watch! he went for the kill like no one I've seen in the last few years and hit like a truck. haveing seen the Benn fight and personaly feeling that it should have been stopped in the 1st round I have to ask...how far would he have gone had it been stopped there?I belive he would have become one of the greatest fighters between 168-175 of all time.

    what do you all think?

How can you feel the fight should have been stopped in the first round? Obviously Benn proved it shouldn't have been stopped.

I heard he was blinking and doing some pretty weird stuff, indicating that something was wrong, well before before the fight ended. He was probably going to have serious problems in fututre fights with trauma whether or not that fight was stopped in the first. Unfortuantly, he was too far gone by the time this fight ended.

I hear u it reminded me of Casa vs Katsidis at that moment. But what a sad fight especially hearing King saying Gerald had no heart. Jones is the only one who gives him support. Once he gives up the sport he said he will visit him. But I hear he gives his sisters tickets to all his fights

He was on the downside technique wise. He wasn't being trained by Emmanuel STeward anymore and he started just to look for one big shot. He stopped body punching and wasn't jabbing enough. Unless he got his head straight he was goin end up like Iron Mike forgetting all he learned and was good at and just looked to land one punch.

Alot was made out that the fight should have been stopped in the 1st, obviously fights have been stopped on less, but according to rules, if the fighter makes it back into the ring under 20 seconds, the fight can continue. Back in the classic era fights were not stopped as nearly as much as they are today and fighters would be given many chances. It wasnt until the 1980s that that the idea of saving fighters from punishment and worrying about the long term damage became a real factor.

That doesnt explaine the ref forcing Gerald to his feet after being hit by an recognised illegal blow!!

If Gerald would have wion in the 1st round...he would have been KO'd by ROY JONES in his next fight!

The Mancini/Kim fight had alot to do with that.

This whole thread is academic cuz Benn was getting up no matter what.

According to many, he has expressed problems prior to the bout, to chances are he would have had a problem somewhere along the line.

Also, as Cash said, he suddenly split with Steward and fell in love with his power. He was being set up to fight Jones, but I think he'd have been stopped or beaten up via wide decision at the rate things were going for him.

He was a self-destructive personality -- but a damn good fighter.

The thing in his head that ****ed up would have become apparent in his next fight, that's all

Not as though it was Benn alone who destroyed him - he had an aneurysm or something in his head that was waiting to happen

And why should it have been stopped in rd1? Benn was able to regain his feet, clear his head, and prove beyond a doubt he was able to recover and go on to beat McLellan

The referee BLATANTLY prevented and interfered with McClellan finishing off Benn.

I pray that I never meet or see Alfred Asaro. I'm not sure I could resist the URGE 2 give that cocksucker what he deserves. I might find myself in a dissimilar hell to which McClellan was sent.:-(

That fight was a tragedy for the sport of Boxing and one of the ultimate examples of how corruption ruins the greatness that is put forth by the fighters.

I have no problems with Benn, he did what he was born to do, and even though his rise to the top was assisted by a crooked ******* referee from hell who deserves 2 burn in those flames 4 eternity!!!

And I salute ROY JONES Jr. for being a MAN and a friend to McClellan afterwards.

Hey Asaro, do both of us a HUGE FAVOR and never travel to Pittsburgh Pa., You might find yourself on the other end of the crook:lol:

no he didn't. this is complete and utter bull****, the ref was counting as benn got himself back into the ring, he didn't lay a finger on him.
