How good would you rate Juan Manuel Marquez' chin?

    He's been down a lot in his career, but he rarely stays down and always comes back to win a fight by KO/TKO or points decision, or gets back up and fights on to lose a decision.

    How good is his chin?

    His chin is above average but his ability to recover quickly is incredible, just look at the first Pacquaio fight.

    Can't massively disagree, other than to say his chin is above average and his recuperation is incredible.

    Remember most of his KD's have been flash knockdowns.Matty's right about his recuperation but I've never seen him really sparkled or doing a funny dance which suggests to me he sometimes goes down sometimes as much from defensive momentum as being caught flush.
    I'm standing by solid.The guy's my equal #1 active fighter.What else am I going to say?

    I agree with the recovery but he takes some huge shots without falling. Solid chin IMO.

    Larry Holmes level. Solid but not the best defensive reflexes, so gets hit super clean sometimes. Which makes it look worse.

    Problem is most people don't realize there are two major components of "chin", and I've been saying this for years (and specifically in the context of discussing JMM) - punch resistance and recovery.

    Marquez might have less punch resistance than someone, but still have a better overall chin because he'll recover from being knocked down or hurt (or be knocked down without being hurt) whereas they won't.

    Seems like Mayorga belongs in the other category. Hard to put down, but once you get him there, he won't last long.

    Excellent example. :thumbsup Yes, he's diametrically opposed to Marquez.

    Give someone Mayorga's ability to soak up individual bombs without showing any ill effect or weakening of legs + Marquez's ability to shake off the cobwebs instantaneously no matter how huge a shot he took and you'd have the most iron chin of all time.

    Conversely, give someone Marquez's individual resistance and Mayorga's overall powers of recovery and you'd have a piece of soggy tissue paper for a chin, let alone glass. :yep

    Marquez's chin improves as the rounds go on. His recovery is always elite, though.

    above average to good is a fair rating imo if the ratings are something like this:

    rock solid= Toney/Mccall
    iron= Vitali/ Floyd/ Margarito/B-Hop
    good= Pac/ Paul Williams
    above average= ward/marquez
    average= mayorga/ uss cunningham
    below average= zab judah/ gamboa
    weak= cory spinks/ bute
    glass= khan/kirkland
