Loads of people discredit the victory because Toney never fought at that weight again and the loss of form after. But Jones never had the best of prep. he injured his right hand (which was confirmed before hand) before the fight

I thought it was a great victory. yer cant say toney took jones lightly (which was the reason for his other crap performances)

    One of the geatest victories.

And didn't Jones injured his hand before Hopkins fight?

Never heard of injury before Toney.

Get´s overrated by guys like PP and underated by Jones hates. A very fine win and a great performance by Jones but Toney was clearly not at his best. Still probably the best win in the histoy of the 168 division so far. Not one of the geatest in the bigger picture though.

2d topic : 1 of d most irrelevant and outcomes ever that does not matter .

I doubt that Jones really hurt his hand prior 2d fight because he actually threw it in it .
Toney should have moved up in weight rather than take this fight , oops , he actually did but he still chose 2 take this fight . His fight with Charles Williams 4 months prior 2 it was evenly fought and Williams was d more accurate fighter in it in most of d rounds . It must b mentioned that both Williams & Toney were severely drained in it and except from Littles and maybe Thornton every Toney fight @ 168 was meaningless including his loss 2 Jones .
If Jones' management thought that Toney was anywhere near form in that period , then that fight would have only happened later and @ higher weight if at all . No wonder there was never a rematch , Jones would rather fight Ruiz than Toney or Jirov .

I remember this fight well. There was a good pre fight build up, followed up by a fantastic stare down. There was much debate as to whom would win. I felt strongly Jones would based on styles.

When a very fast and speedy boxer type meets a sometimes lethargic counter puncher it cancels out what the counter puncher does best. Toney was not going to out box Jones, nor could he counter Jones lighting fast jabs or crosses. This fight wasn't much different that Hopkins vs Jones.

Had Toney known that Jones had a glass jaw, maybe he would have fought this one differently.

Jones always would beat Toney. I agree but Toney at his best would be more competative. Jones wasn´t winning as easily and clearly against Hopkins too, and given thei developement stages IMO a prime for prime fight would have been even more competative. Guess Jones would have still won though.

It's a dominant master class over an ATG, this is the same Toney who put on a clinic against Barkley a few months earlier.

People point to how easy it looked and assume the opponent. Look at what Jones did to Reggie Johnson at 31seconds (below) who many people had beating Toney and who had a good case for being an undefeated MW and LHW champion at this time

Come on BE he must have contemplated some thoughts while weighing 168, even if he only dehydrated down to it for a very short period of time

    Agree.

A very underrated win for Jones.

Just like his many wins actually.

Nah, i like Reggie Johnson at middle, but he was never remotely convincing at lightheavy. He won a title by beating one of the biggest unskilled hypejobs of the whole era in Guthrie.generally looked undersized, sluggish and lacking the sharpness needed for that cute mobile style of his to really work.

NOt that Jones wasn't very impressive against him, but it was far from the best 160 Reggie.

Very impressive. He dominated and clowned one of the most skillful fighters in his era.

Roy's CV is not as bad as people will have you believe.

Toney may have been a little less than at his best, but stylistically he was always going to struggle with Jones no matter how sharp he came in.

If Toney did come in at his best it would have made Jones' victory even greater because he still would have outclassed him.

As it stands, a great win in anyone's language because that Toney still would have done well against the right type of opponent.
