btw two of Toney's biggest wins at 168 and fights that were a big part of him being rated so highly at the time were against men who had no business at 168(barkley and Williams). Both totally drained trying to get down for a payday.

It was a tremendous, career defining win ... he beat him easily and Toney was at the top of his game at the time ... Toney took years to get over it ...

But most ppl never admit it 4 some reason .
    Same with Toney's win vs Nunn @ 160 .

Don't know about Nunn.I tend to think he had just sunk into bad training habits and Coke.

Seriously? He wasn't KO'd, or even remotely hurt, for 10 years after this fight, when he was 36 years old. The Jones Glass Jaw myth is just that, a myth.

And excuses need to be thrown out, Jones controlled almost every minute of this fight. Not the most scintillating action, but a great and impressive performance, truly demonstrating the gap between a great and a very good fighter.

Very good win, whether Toney was weight drained or not doesn`t change the fact that Jones won 12-0 vs a fellow top 3 p4per.

A masterful performance to be simply put. Pre fight it seemed that it was a fight to be split down the middle over who would win but Jones put on probably his purest performance and it should go down as his best win I believe.

A great win. Lazy fighters like Toney always use excuses, but Toney would never be as consistently great again. He was a great middleweight, he wasnt so great when he didnt have to come into fights in shape and at middleweight he had to do the things he didnt do at the higher weights.

a great win. The excuse for Toney was just an excuse. Jones won against a guy who is Hall of Fame and shut him out. Jones win over Hopkins was less significant since it was before Hopkins was complete.

    Agreed

People give Sugar Ray all the credit in the world for beating your boy Tommy Hearns in 1981

But That Victory could be seriously discredited because Hearns never fought at welter again

It was a boring fight. Neither fighter was really willing to engage.

I agree that Tommy was not experienced enough to deal with certain things in that fight, although I always considered it a legit win for Ray.
I know that had he fought the Hearns who fought Benitez he would have probably lost, yet to be honest that Hearns got better because he learned to pace himself and fight the correct style because of the Leonard fight. Funny how that works.
The excuse I never really buy is when a fighter says he was out of shape like Toney did or had weight problems. Why wouldn't a fighter train for a big fight? Makes no sense and it is an insult to the people who pay for those fights. These issue show up in the most important fights of most fighters careers who use the in shape excuse. Nonsense. It was Jones who made Toney look bad. Like Buddy McGirt and his shoulder problem. If he couldn't be 100 percent and had the excuse, why fight big fights? If he loses there is the excuse.

Just to be clear on some of the comments made about Toneys weight problems. He DID have trouble making weight. I know cuz I was there. He was at top rank gym in las vegas two days before the fight. I walked into the gym with it packed with people standing around the heavy bag area. As I peered in to see what was going on, TYoney was in a black sauna suit, dripping with sweat; head on the heavy bag with barely enough energy to lift his hands. I went over to the treadmill area to run and five minutes later, Toney is dragged over buy two of his men. He could barely walk. They lied him down on the bench behind the treadmills and turned on the treadmill next to me. They looked at him lying down looking dead on the bench and figured out that the treadmill plan would not work. They then put him in the sauna. Toney was completely drained for that fight. Although I do not know how much weight he had to lose in one day, (weigh in was the next day), He must have had a lot to lose.

Anyways, I picked toney to win that fight but after watching the style match up, I agree that jones probably still beats him. However, for those who believe it was just a rumor made for an excuse, toney was definately drained. I kow for a fact.
