I discredit the opponent. I can't be bothered going over it again, but Toney was horrifically weight-drained for that fight - yeah, way more than normal. As a scalp, this has an impact, a serious one.

But as a performance, it is absolutely mesmerizing. Last time around it spoiled my Toney career set, I just couldn't get by the Jones fight, watched it three times and then the other fights that come after, they just seem less than. It's a pretty crazy performance. But not a great win.

Other than a couple of fights you can probably safely stop with Toney at the Jones fight anyway.

The fight stunk........... Toney was dead at 168 by Nov. 1994..... When a dude needs two tall boys of Gatorade to chug after making weight, sumthin' ain't too kosher...... Toney shot his wadd earlier against Prince Charles Williams during the summer of 1994.....

A lot of fighters have to dry out to make weight. Toney maybe by this point had to take it a little further, but Toney liked to be lazy and not train hard. At least at middleweight he had to stay in the gym and stay active doing roadwork and cardio, something he always hated to do as a fighter.

Again, he was never as good as he was at middleweight except as a cruiser later down the line, but at that point in his career, he had to do the same things he was doing at middleweight to make weight and thats a very important part of how good he could be. I didnt see signs in the Jone JR fight of him being fatigued either, just being outclassed one sidedly. Usually guys who are dried out and fatigued get knocked down or out a lot easier or suprisingly. Toney fought 12 rounds.

Toney's problem was always that he had to be in shape and like many fighters he didnt think he had to train hard to be at his best.

Yes Toney could no longer make the weight without killing himself, but yes that was his own fault to some degree. If you know you have a big fight coming up, why the heck do you walk around so high in weight and not train properly well in advance of the fight? Big blunder. Was he looking for an excuse? And no I don't think it really mattered. Jones, Jr. put up the most brilliant performance of his career at that point and I think that version of Jones beats Toney even at James' best. He was just way too fast and strong and Toney simply could not catch him with his flatfooted counter style.

Honestly, Toney went up to 175 in his next fight and didn't really perform any better against Griffin.

That fight is proof speed kills.

Toney could barely touch Roy. They were operating on two different levels that night.
