The Guzman up to about 2008 was the real deal. He would clown a times, but his slick moves and chin were fun to watch. He had hand issues too if I recall. He'd do fine, probably be the number one guy at whatever weight class he was at. He seemed like the kind of guy that needed a really threatening opponent to keep him on point, otherwise he was going to have fun instead of trying to punish and get the opponent out of there. I had him 50/50 vs Pac at the time, he had a real legit shot. Arum felt he was a threat as well, because after Guzman clowned Arum's Mexican fighter Soto easily, Arum claimed he stunk the fight out with his goofing off, and just lost out on a Pacquiao fight. Classic **** was when Guzman started to Merengue right in front of Soto, and Soto charged in throwing a right hand, which Guzman ducked off the Merengue, and then let off a shoe shining combination on Soto's dome.
The guy who walked a then-ultra-dangerous Humberto Soto was p4p worthy. Pity the wheels came off on his career shortly thereafter. Here was my take after that fight ( #Throwbackit'sstillthursdaysomewhere) https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/i-find-it-pretty-funny.29538/
joan guzman is one of my favourite fighters. I really enjoy him fighting. He has something different, unique, he can make beautiful boxing. I love his fights. It's a pity he didnt get higher, because I trully think he had talent for more.
curse of the gifted. I feel like fighters who have natural abilities don't push that extra little bit because everything comes so easy for them. couple that on top of a ridiculous training regime and you can't blame them for taking shortcuts.
