I was looking at Tunney's record and I noticed that his biggest wins against: Dempsey, Greb (most), Gibbons, Carpentier, Smith, Levinsky are all after their primes (pre-prime in the case of Tommy Loughran). There is also the glaring absence of black contenders from the 1920s. Can Tunney really be a top-ballot ATG if we take all this into consideration?
Well, he's certainly no where near the top 10 or 15 probably. But I suspect he's better than some people have him rated.
What I can say is that he was a beautiful, beautiful fighter. Greb prepared him for Dempsey expertly with how comfortable Gene was inside. Same thing that in big part let Conn trouble Louis so much. Those sneaky bursts of educated wrestling and space negotiation chipping away at the clock and zeroing initiative earned laborously after chasing them around the ring.
He was probably the GOAT when he retired. He beat everyone he got in the ring with and for his era(not the one that came after)his resume is amazing. If you include a pre 1930s HW on your all time list it should be Gene Tunney. In terms of Willis Dempsey is the one who should have fought him. Willis had an interim reign of sorts from when he beat Firpo(he was supposed to fight Dempsey instead). This ended before Tunney could have fought him when he lost to Sharkey and Uzcudin.
I don’t know about HW or LHW rankings all time etc unless it’s very obvious… however another obvious fact is he was one of the finest boxers I’ve ever seen on film.
Excellent tactician with awesome speed and movement, under appreciated at his time due to his defensive style but a master boxer who would ask serious questions of any similarly sized boxer Also as a Heavyweight was undefeated
Tunney was the prototype of Lebron James wearing non-prescription glasses and flaunting Malcolm X's Autobiography perpetually bookmarked at page 8.
He definitely manufactured a certain image for himself, but that is a smart thing to do in it's own right.
