How Great was Ken Buchannan ?

Yeah he looks Ray Liotta in Goodfellas there! What about him and Ken prime for prime? Would be great tactically and would without a doubt heat up.

 

I like Buchanan a lot but Duran was winning the fight.

 

i see carlos beating ken prime for prime on points though but what a technical fight it would be and a good one

 

yeh theres no way buchanan was beating duran i had him somehing like 5 rounds down

also after not fighting ken MSG banned duran from fighting their for a while

 

How great was Ken? The greatest Brit in the last 50 years. That great.

And I say that despite thinking that he lost the first Laguna fight. By the way, the crowd were actually Pro Buchanan in Puerto Rico, not pro Laguna.

Others have had better skills perhaps, or more talent, but overall I think his career is more impressive than any other Brit's in the last 50 years.

just A few observations,

Re the Guts ishamatsui (?) Fight, Locals were night after night singing and Shouting outside Ken's Hotel in the early Hours, in the run up to the fight Ken apparently never got an uninterrupted nights Sleep, Ken was also Thumbed by a Sparring Partner, Despite this, and Ken being sleightly past his best, he still showed Flashes of his old self against Guts, and when he did he outclassed Guts, but ken did not seem to be able to Maintain it, but for me it was obvious that had Guts been meeting a Prime Ken, he would not of been a problem for Ken

Ken was that rareity amonst Pure "Boxers" it that the ropes or corners were not a No-No Spiders web Trap for Him, He would Bob up and Down Sway Left and Right, then Spin out to the centre of the ring in a blur of tartan and a sleight nodding of the Head, he even did this against a superb boxer like Laguna, when he wanted to Ken could be loike a Ghost in the Ring,

Ken had more Bounce-Per Ounce then most Boxers, Fighting in the Days of Fifteen Rounders, Ken was still Fluently Darting Around in the Fifteenth round of Fights

Ken, despite his frail Choir-boy Looks, was a real Tough Guy, He took some great Shots from Duran, but it was only that after-bell Low Impact, that almost Gave Ken a 2nd Adams Apple that put him Down, Even then Ken wanted the Fight to Continue

Re Kens Failed Return Matchwith Duran, of course he thourghly deserved one, and he had started to plant himself a bit more and rack up a few impressive stoppages, Chung Kil Lee, Chu Chu Malave Frankie Otero (II)
So Desreved Yes, but to suggest that Roberto himself was somehow afraid of Ken is not really legitimate, After Roberto took the title from Ken he was Upset by Esteban Dejesus in a non title fight and Floored Heavily in the first, I think the Focus the centred on Getting Revenge on Esteban, and Once Roberto had acheived this, being floored heavily in the first once again, the Focus was on a Rubber Match, Esteban was a superb fighter in his own right, and perhaps, with a big punch capable of flooring roberto in Tow, to The non british Fans, The Journalists the Boxing powerbrokers and establishment Esteban Dejusus representated a more Exciting and lucrative opponent for a 3rd meeting than would Buchanan for a second, perhaps not Fair, but Probably a Sound Business decision

Ken Did say in his Book that When he won the English journalists used to call him / Claim Him "Britains" Ken Buchanan - And on the rare occassions he Lost he suddenly became "Scotlands" Ken Buchanan - Now i think Ken gets the Full Respect he Deserves, Most see him as a great Lightweight who would indeed trouble the Absolute Best.

Re Robertos Claiming that Ken was the Best or toughestman he fought, Well Perhaps Roberto has Mellowed in his old Age, Roberto fought so many great and Very good fighters I would be surprised if he really did have Ken at the top of the list ( Maybe he was still sending a Dig at SRL ?) Ken was certainly one of the very best that Roberto Fought, and that is Fantastic praise enough
