One of the most underrated contenders of the last 25 years if you ask me.

What he did to Tye Fields was nothing short of spectacular

"Great" and "Monte Barret" in the same sentence?

    *Leaves thread laughing*

Saw him drop and decision Tua in AC. Handled him pretty easily as I remember it. That's about all I know about him.

That Klitschko fight sure blew out a lot of candles.

That was a major league beating and the heavies just do not rebound well from that too often. That bout put his career in journeyman status and he was not a blue chip talent going into the fight.

He was a good fighter but I would not call him great by any means. I was ringside when he beat Owen "what the heck" Beck in St Louis. At that time, Beck was considered one of King's big heavyweight prospects. Monte absolutely tore him apart in that fight. Beck went on to become a journeyman fighter and Barrett ended fighting for a world title. He was a good fighter for sure.

You make it sound like beating Tye Fields means something. Tye Fields was an absolute joke.

Monte Barrett definity had an all-time great ego, when I met him.

I was at the open workouts when he faced Hasim Rahman for the interim vacant (whatever) WBC belt (after Vitali retired the first time).

Barrett was going on and on with Nate Jones regarding something along the lines of "Can you believe out of all of us Lamon Brewster is a champ?" They were just ripping on Brewster, because they thought they were such better amateurs than Brewster had been and had no idea how, out of everyone in their heavyweight "class" of 96, that Brewster had accomplished more than they had. I found it particularly odd because Brewster had literally beaten Nate Jones into retirement with brain damage ... so I didn't know why he was so surprised Brewster was a top guy then.

It was like, well, if Lamon Brewster can become champ, I'll certainly be champ.

And, after Barrett lost to Rahman, I remember Barrett storming into the postfight press conference accusing Don King and the co-owner of the United Center (Bill Wirtz) of "fixing" the judges so Barrett wouldn't win. And King tore Barrett a new butt hole at the microphone in front of everyone for distrespecting their host before Barrett stormed out in a tantrum. King was like, "Are you out of your goddamn mind?"

Barrett was just so full of himself. He couldn't believe he'd lost.

I think he would have done well in the 70s. Wins over Quarry, Norton, Lyle, Young, Ellis and Bob Foster would have made him one of the best.

Again, good fighter not great. Clearly Valuev size was an issue.

Wlad had a great knockout over Barrett. Double dare you to watch it. Barrett was just a contender who once cracked the top ten in Ring Magazine.

Yeah, that was excessive! I think Valuev put it on him too, although he did have fleeting success in that fight. Too much freakshow with watching that guy fight though

He was held to an SD by shot Witherspoon, drew with a shot 25lbs overweight Tua, and defeated club fighter Fields. All of the quality top dudes he fought he lost to, usually by brutal KO

He isnt even hall of fame worthy much less does he warrant even a questioning "great" in the same sentence as his name.

Average he was gatekeeper level who pulled off some upsets against pretenders.
