Ricardo Lopez does not make boxrec's top 60 Mexican p4p list , nor does he make my own top 30 list of Mexican fighters , nor does he make my top 120 p4p OAT . Lopez does not get flack in these parts , he is vastly over8ed in these parts , baring a select few . Who sez Kevin Watts > Ricardo Lopez ?
For Lopez' infighting watch rd 6 and 7 here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=kvzfi0qQAEk&NR=1
Lopez knew the public was questioning his competition. He should have moved up and taken on the legit Flyweight Champion.
Always intelligible as usual. Let's just say, I've seen a lot of great fighters live over the past 20 years, Whitaker, Chavez, Jones, Jr, Tyson, Lewis, old ass Holmes... Lopez is cut from their cloth. Plain and simple. His skill and physical level was amazing. And it just wasn't a matter of subpar opposition.
Lopez is my most favorite, favorite fighter of all time. I don't think I've ever seen a fighter that was this well rounded and beautiful to watch. But unlike most people I try to tell it like it is instead of just giving him big ups without any criticism. Top 100 seems harsh, considering how dominant he was and how many title defenses he had, but I just can't see him around the Top 10. Top 50 makes sense. Lopez is probably the best fighter to study from for any beginning fighters. Just an incredible technique.
Those of you who argue that he was too small to be considered for a high pound for pound ranking. I don't get it. Isn't that what Pound for Pound means?
In terms of what someone can do in a ring. What I often refer to as Skills/Ability/Talent My ranking looks like 1. Benny Leonard 2. Ray Robinson 3. Pernell Whitaker 4. Ray Leonard 5. Floyd Mayweather 6. Roy Jones 7. Ricardo Lopez
Top 75 for me Great fighter but not completely flawless and as some other posters stated, he had less than stellar opposition. He should have and maybe could have moved up in weight, he looks quite big for his weightclass
Whitaker a borderline great , Chavez yes . D rest , not . And Lopez , not . However there really were a lot of gr8 fighters over d past 20 years (and many many more so in say , 1980-2000) : Pacquiao , Marquez , Wright , McCall , Tua , Byrd , Toney , Orlin Norris , Holyfield , Valuev & Vitali (in h2h terms) , Omar Andres Narvaez , Quartey , DLH (even he was gr8 compared 2d list u posted) , Jose Luis Lopez , Danny Perez , Lovermore Ndou , Donaire , Darchinyan , Froch and more .
Agreed. But I put the guys cut from the same cloth with the superior opposition, of which there are many, above him.
