He went 74-1 and finished his career at 81-5 70 kos with 4 defeats by way of KO, how great is he, does he make the ATG list?
I tend to agree with this. I had an older friend tell me Ogrady was such a great fighter, I said but who did he fight though of note!? He was a great commentator but overrated as a fighter.
He wasn't a bad fighter but that record was pure fluff in matches set-up by his promotor/father. It makes you believe he was some kind of diamond in the rough if you just look at the numbers. But if you want to talk just numbers look at someone like Buck Smith, who fought even worst competition then O'Grady to get his record.
He was decent but nowhere near an ATG. He was marketed as a good looking, tough Irishman and sold a lot of tickets.
He was a decent champion whose record was padded. He had some decent skills and wins but that is about it. He got jobbed against Jim Watt though.
Talented fighter with an exciting, aggressive style. He was also a great body puncher. I think his win over Hilmer Kenty showed his best performance. His chin was certainly not that great. As others said his record was deeply padded. Started young at age 15 and burned out quickly, retiring at age 24. I always found his fight against Shig Fukuyama impressive given at the age of 19 he was able to fight through a horrific cut that made him bleed profusely to the point that his entire face was covered in blood. Still managed to win by 5th round stoppage. This content is protected
I think the consensus is spot on, he was a pretty good fighter, even though he won a world title I think he was managed very poorly in my opinion.
His father certainly didn't help his career much at all. Still hard to believe that he was purposefully matched with Danny Lopez at the age of 18 by his father, who knew full well that his son would lose all because he wanted his undefeated record wiped.
He wasn't great but he was a tough, exciting fighter. You weren't going to get cheated out of a ticket price if you went to his fights. He looked good against Watt before the butt and cut. He clearly outfought Kenty to win the title. Not sure I understand why his father let Sean get stripped of his title. He was supposed to fight Claude Noel but Pat opted to give up the title and fought Andy Ganigan instead. Turned out to be the beginning of the end for Sean. The father's beef with the WBA I guess involved money or contracts or something I guess. I thought Sean fought well against a tough welterweight Pete Ranzany although he lost the fight. Sean said at one point, he could no longer take a punch and was taking too much punishment so he decided smartly to get out. I also liked his work as a commentator.
Decent fighter, commentator and a nice guy. But he was way too protected to give him any sort of rating.
Looking at his record, he faced a Danny Young, who went 0-31-3 (KO'd 18 times) in a 12 year career. That must have been a real test.
