Remember being at a Talk In Night with Sugar Ray Leonard in my home town. I managed to be able to ask him a question and simply asked him who was the greatest fighter he ever fought, and he answered Wilfred Benitez.
Great fighter and set a world record against another great fighter, a record that will never be beaten on that sort of level, And also was the youngest 3 weight world champion , again against top fighters and true world champions.
Benitez when focused and well trained was one of the top 10-20 welters in history. Even in losing efforts you saw how special he was against a prime Leonard and Hearns. Very few top caliber fighters in the history the sport at the welter , jr.welter, jr.middle weight limits could defeat him when he was prime and focused.
To quote the old mantra: "Never has so little been done with so much!" One of my favs! Won big bucks on his fight with Duran. Trained for Leonard like an inept idiot; I've heard his father walked out of camp and went back to Puerto Rico. Wanna compare talents over eras? Willie Pep & Wilfred were cut out of the same mold; "you wanna hit me?...ain't gonna happen!" Unfortunately Benitez often pissed away that God-given attribute! My $0.02
