While it is obvious in hindsight that the rules favored Willard, it might not have been so obvious at the time. Bigger men are inherently more vulnerable to heat exhaustion, and Johnson's style was very economical. Also Willard had never gone past 20 at this point.
I recommend watching the film. Willard did MUCH better than history gives him credit for, and won many rounds before the KO. Though clumsy in attack with little defense, Willard owned the action from the outside, and Johnson could not hurt him. Johnson was the better up close, The KO was legit. Johnson was badly hurt from a body shot in round 25, and out in round 26. Rounds 1, 12, 14, 15, 17-21, 25 and 26 are shown. There is more to this film than the above clips, but you can get a feel for the action. Those who think it was all Johnson before round 20, should see the action in rounds, 12, 14, 15 and 17-21, because it wasn't The fight starts at the 9:53 mark, and yes that is Sam McVey in Johnson's corner shown before. I'm still waiting for you reply about my breakdown of Moran vs Johnson. You suggested to watch it and see Moran winning on the outside, but I saw something completely different.
I suggest you watch it again as Moran was the better on the outside in a general sense, Johnson the better on the inside.
Both did public workouts anyone establishing a betting line could readily see who was in shape and who wasn't.
No, he wasn't... at least not on the film we have. I scored it and Moran literally landed 2 punches on Johnson, neither did any damage. Johnson scored on Moran with his quick jabs at will. I made a post with a breakdown about a month ago. If you think that I'm wrong, point out my mistakes instead of empty words "watch it again".
Okay, so I watched a bit of your deception of the action. 2:00 start of the fight 2:20 first Moran try from the outside, missed 2:33 first clinch 3:00 two quick lefts by Johnson, landed > This content is protected 3:40 another quick left followed by clinch, Moran doesn't land anything 4:01 right cross, can't say if landed due to film 4:51 Moran right hand missed, Johnson countered with uppercut and clinch 5:01 famous Johnson uppercut inside >>> This content is protected I agree Johnson won round one. Quick point, when I say low punch output, I mean it. Johnson doesn't throw much. The above is one round, and a small part of another, there is more film on this one.
I described all 20 minutes long video, the most complete I could find. Moran didn't do much better in later rounds if at all. In late rounds he looked very tired and visibly hurt, Johnson was unmarked and quite fresh despite big weight for him.
From the short film I watched you seeing punches that were never throw and landed by Johnson. If I have time I'll watch more.
Show me examples of punches I've seen that were never thrown. The first action you disagree with me at 3:00 - it's not easy to say if both lefts landed, but one definitely did and both were thrown. I still see both landind, but quality isn't perfect. 5:01 - you don't see short uppercuts on inside? The same punch Johnson tortured old Jeffries years before. More importantly - show me Moran punches from outside landing. Show me him being superior outboxer. Even if I credited Johnson with a few blows more that didn't land, you can't find any examples of Moran outboxing him from outside. Johnson defense was way too good for Moran and he also scored with jabs at will.
