It doesn't seem too hard of a job. How does a person like Don King or Bob Arum become a promoter? Why can't a fighter just promote themselves? Can anyone explain to me some of the details of this?

I know a local promoter. He posts here. Prepare to lose money on most cards until you get things rolling. There is lots that go to putting on a show.

    This.

There's things involved that people don't think of. Lighting, seating, the construction of the ring. The ring announcer, ring card girls, etc.

To be Bob Arum? not hard at all. All the hard work is already done.

To be Joe Nobody with a stable of guys who never sniffed the National PAL tournament let alone the olympics trying to convince people to watch them fight bums? A lot harder.

If you have the financial backing then you can start at any time.

As for how do you become a promoter, Go to the gyms and meet with the trainers and fighters and ask to promote them, sign a contract to promote(i.e. you will get them x number of fights and pay them x amount per fight) and in turn its now your responsibility to go out secure venues find opponents and get a signed. Then handle promoting the fight card, attracting media and fans to the fight, and doing all the behind the scenes action. And when its all said and done you made -$2000 because nobody came to the fight but you hopefully built a guys record up so that you can reap the rewards later.

Honestly you would be better off begging to work for one of the established promoters as an assistant of some sort before trying to go out on your own.

    this. .

to be a promotor? easy - anybody with money could become one. . to be a good promotor, and actually make money? pretty difficult.

There are more successful boxers making a living with boxing than there are successful promoters.

Just to give you an idea. While being amoral helps, there are interpersonal skills that would require to be in extremely high level.

It is an entrepreneur, salesman, lawyer, coach, manager, father, etc. all rolled in to one.

it's impossible to promote yourself just starting off. . unless you have a few hundred G's (AT LEAST) capital, or enough collateral to secure a loan. . .

Even then, unless you're selling a lot of tickets, or getting TV money (which is unlikely even for hottest prospects for their first 10-15 fights), you're not going to make money

Then there's the business end of it. . All these promotors have working relationships with so many people. . These same people aren't going to give you good deals like they do their buddies. . And you got contracts, and a whole lot fo complex paperwork, etc.

Most of the big time promotors have hundreds of employees including lawyers, PR people, and a whole team organizing ****. . .

That's why people need to understand that Arum, and Oscar are not making money on their boxers until they reach the HBO level. . And even then, they're not making much. . They don't really cash in until they reach the 500k plus PPV type area. . .

That's why there are only 2-4 promotors who pretty much control everything in USA.

Promotion in Europe is TOP NOTCH. There are really only two real promoters in the U.S. that come to mind. Top Rank and Golden Boy. In order for a promoter to be successful and build their fighter to be a real attraction they must host a fight in the right locale, have good ticket prices and put other local attractions on card as well or you could be like Gary Shaw and just collect paychecks from T.V. networks and host fights in the middle of nowhere, AKA take the money and run.

You got Gary Shaw, Dan Goossen, and Lou DiBella. . But they are just hanging on by a thread, as each only have one, or two showtime/hbo level fighters.

DiBella really has an eye for talent that nobody else takes a chance on; he scours the darkest corners of the entire world for talent - he's the "moneyball" man on boxing. . He found Sergio Martinez in Spain fighting retired bull-matadors for 200 a pop, and got him a shot on HBO as an "opponent" against Kermit Cintron. . . BUt the only reason he was able to secure that shot on HBO was because of his "connections" with an old Harvard business school buddy who works at HBO. . .

Same with Gabriel Campillo - DiBella found him in Spain as well. . . Gotten him numerous shots, all of which he's won, but got robbed BLIND.

Daniel Geale, another boxer he has. . Got him the title shot in Germany. . .
