I cracked my rib while sparring with a Chicago heavyweight. Thought my speed made me safe but heavyweights are heavyweights and I was just a middleweight. Every breath I inhaled made me aware that my rib was fractured until I had to quit. It seems like every time I inhales I could feel and hear the two sections of the break grind against each other. Not only was the pain terrible, but Physiological, I was through. I think today's stoppage by Diaz's corner was the smart thing to do. What do you think?
I had a broken rib while sparring at Ft. Benning, GA................it hurts like hell and there is nothing you can do about it, just wait.
in your opinion was it possible to tell if he did have a cracked rib? would he have been able to do the post fight interview without looking like he was in excruciating pain?
On the stool, he appeared as if his left side was injured. That's the same side thurman landed that body shot. If you look at the match you can see Diaz sitting and leaning to his left, as if he is trying to ease the pain there. the injury isn't very apparent, but it does hurt like hell everytime you draw a breath. fractured rib takes about 4-6 months to heal because it is always stressed as you breath.
crack rib hurts to breath and makes you more weak because your not breathing right. still think diaz took a payday unless thurman is just that damn beasty ?
From the replay, it looked like Diaz was up in the air a bit - and the ribcage was both exposed and his body had forward momentum while Thurman hit him with a planted, fully leveraged shot. Diaz was also stretched out - so his abdominal muscles wouldnt have been proving much support. I think it was a legit quit, not just a payday. When you look at the shot that did it, there is no reason to think it couldnt have cracked a rib. Was a really bad position to take a full-body-force right hand from someone like Thurman.
If you rewatch the fight you can clearly see bruising in the very spot Keith landed the body shot, also the exact spot they were attempting to massage in the corner...yes he was injured I believe
