Had the fight continued and he got hit there more, he would have gone down and stayed down.
Worst, a cracked rib can easily become a broken rib. With a bad enough break you may have to undergo surgery.

You cannot perform anywhere near peak with a broken rib. It completely dominates your thoughts and fouls up your breathing.
Best to quit, heal and fight another day.

That's how long it takes you to heal, an 18 year old or however old you are.

A 35 year old doesn't heal at the same rate.

The older, the slower it takes.
I tried to do a 6 mile run while mine was cracked. I got a bout a mile before I quit.

    Good thread. Thanks for posting.

I don't much see the controversy here.

This is not a guy prone to quitting, I could understand the misplaced criticism if he was.

I've cracked my ribs twice and it was impossible to even run while it was healing. Boxing with that would be absurd - it hurts to breathe let alone fight. The chance of getting a punctured lung would be pretty high too.

I tthink some people may say he was faking the injury, but a cracked rib ain't no joke. Even with a broken jaw you can still breath.

N'Du fought on with a cracked rib against Cotto, not in good fashion.
