Did you forget Eubank forgot his pen? Did you also forget Canelo fighting Lovemore Ndoe, Mathew Hatton, Josecito Lopez, Amir Khan, and Mell Charlo? You walked into that one bro.
I was impressed how superior GGG was to Lemieux, it was a devastating performance. Great for ppv in my book.
the fact that you're hanging your hat on Canelo, a guy from a lower division says it all, lol. Why didn't you expect Golovkin to fight Ward the same way you wanted Canelo to face him? Why aren't you holding that agaisnt him? At least Canelo made the fight happen 3 times....and I won't even hold it agaisnt G myself, I just feel like he didn't search out the fights to prove he was what you guys said he was. In your heart of hearts you really want to say Ggg's career defining matchup was against a guy you probably feel was overhyped AND from a lower division? That don't do it for me lol. And even then he sat and waited for the rematches rather than face the other belt holders in his division, he had Charlo and Andrade there to unify. Imagine if Golovkin had moved up in weight and KO'd and light heavyweight champion or any of the guys at 168. It's not like people weren't calling his name for fights once he fought Canelo.
Golovkin was doing fine chewing up and spitting out the middleweight division. Ward had promoter problems and injuries from what i remember. When Ward was finally ready to fight again, GGG was getting ready to fight Lemeiux. If i remember correctly, Ward wanted GGG to fight him next or he was going to move up to light heavyweight. Then Ward moved up. I'm sure the plan was to defeat Canelo first before even considering fighting Ward, who was a light heavyweight by then. Before the Canelo fight Able had a feeling there might be a trilogy. The rest is history, the robberies happend then next thing you know GGG is 38 years old, and Ward was retired. If you remember Canelo vacated his belt rather than fight Derevyanchenko, then GGG fought him for the vacated belt. Then the other two guys Canelo was avoiding Mall and Andrade, you wanted a 38 to 40 year old GGG to take on as well? Thats after defending his belt 20 times (18) by KO and getting robbed twice? We will see if Canelo is still doing that at 38 to 40 years old. That being said, i too would have liked to see him fight Andrade, and Charlo even though he was well past his best. The Murata win was excellent for a 40 year old as well though.
I always see these excuses made for him that would never be made for other guys. Canelo was stripped of the IBF because they couldn't come to terms with Sergi. If we're going to roll with "he ducked him"....he ducked him to face Kovalev?! Laughable to say the least and this also rings true for the Ward fight, who ducks someone to fight a guy even more dangerous lol? Why would GGGs age come into play when considering a fight with Charlo or Andrade, but not Canelo. These things have to make sense.....
I'm of the belief that if GGG faced Ward he'd have never even got the opportunity to cash out with Canelo.
So he was smart right? The way i see it, if GGG was as super human as he was looking for a while, and KO'd Jacobs, battered Canelo similar to what he did to Murray, then go out with a grand finaly fight vs the guy two weight divisions bigger than him like Ward if he chose to, but he had 3 competitive fights vs the very top of his division with Jacobs and Canelo twice. Ward was licking his chops wanting to fight the much smaller and much more popular GGG. GGG did well walking through the middleweight division setting records and knocking practically evergbody out in that division who would step foot in the ring with him. He is a legend and didn't need Ward. I will say this, i think the Jacobs that fought GGG and Canelo, especially the one that fought GGG, may be better than anybody else that Canelo fought outside of GGG. i think that Jacobs could take, possibly Plant, Saunders,Yildrim,Fielding, the Weight drained Smith, who should have lost to Ryder and got battered by Canelo,Jacobs also beat Chavez, jacobs would likely beat Cotto. He might not beat a weight drained tired Kovalev, but he might also. This same Jacobs beat Derevyanchenko by only one point. So Canelo's ceiling isn't much higher than GGG if at all. Derevyanchenko would have had a great chance at defeating that Kovalev, as seen vs Munguia.
Nobody in middleweight histpry has an easy time with G. Cannot say who he beats, but he would be trouble.
GGG did a fantastic job systematically breaking down and stopping Lemiuex. Even during the rare times Lemiuex landed on GGG clean he wasn't affected. GGG'S iron chin was on display and clear for all to see that evening. That fight is when i realised what we all were going to witness in future fights, that GGG'S chin is not just hype.
I think people overrate the past more than the future. What MW has a better jab than Golovkin? Everything comes from a jab. What MW has an extensive and decorated amateur career with almost 300+ fights? That’s an extraordinary amount of experience, and the top 5 all time MW would all struggle with that. Not to mention he has an iron chin, and hits like a truck. He also that subtle elite defence many gloss over. I’m not saying he beats everyone, but I don’t imagine anyone not struggling with him. Duran is a great boxer, but given Leonard got beat by a smaller guy moving up, I’m not convinced the likes of Leonard would be able to deal with Golovkin.
