Yup. Canto was incredible. Overcoming ridiculous physical disadvantages with brilliant pure boxing. I watched his fight with Antonio Avelar about a month ago. Love the Benton shout. Better defensively than guys like Toney or Hopkins in my opinion. Benitez, Zapata, Lora, Starling, Wright, Duran, Starling, and 60s Ali would all be on that shortlist of greatest defensive fighters I've seen as well. As for the thread, I rate Locche as an all-time great.
It amuses me when people cite Whitaker's fundamentals and technique. You couldn't be taught that **** over your entire life span. Floyd would be the way to go in that case, but chances are you won't master it to 1/10 the degree or possess the same reflexes and natural physical gifts that benefit it in making him all the more impenetrable.
:good Harold Johnson is another guy whose D was phenomenal, and when Kalumbay was on, his D was a wonder to behold as well.
Johnson is so textbook and fundamentally sound. I'm going to slap myself for forgetting Sumbu Kalambay. He's really underrated nowadays.
It's certainly among the most underrated D's in history. Ditto JCC, and Finito Lopez. Eusebio Pedroza, Saoul Mamby, Eddie Perkins, and Sugar Ray Leonard all had solid D's and warrant mention in their own right.
He's not trying to give any genuine compliments, Drew. http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=442007 Just had to squeeze Pedroza in among mentions for another topic, eh?
He's one of the most naturally talented men to ever step between the ropes imo. Not only does he look unbelievably good on film but he had such a cavalier attitude to the sport, never training hard & even smoking between rounds. Pep had better feet & Whitaker better head movement but Locche is the greatest defensive fighter of all time. Like Benitez he had uncommon anticipation & reflexes but even after his prime Locche made good fighters look like rank amateurs. He was completely unflappable & looks incredibly relaxed in the ring, like no-one else Ive ever seen he makes a bloody brutal sport look about as tough as a Sunday stroll in the park. Locche a genius, I wish there was more footage of him.
