Lets say his weight ballooned up a bit higher. He fought at LHW for a few fights when he was in his 40's... Could he have pulled a Fernando Castro and fought his way up to 190 pounds as a Cruiserweight? If Castro did so with mixed success I'm imagining a 37-40 year old Duran from the Barkley timeframe could have done a bit up there.
I dont really think so...he was still making just about 160 whilst close to 50. From memory he only weighed in at the lightheavy limit a couple of times..Im pretty sure I have at least one of those fights on tape..most of his later fights around that weight he was proper well past it. Due to its overall weakness historically and its young age, he could have been a titlist at 168 for a little while around the late 80's, early 90's. But IMO the limit of his effective weight range was around middle. He would probably be better served coming in light for supermiddle title fights if he had managed to hang on to one for a while.
Duran, if matched carefully, could have defeated a grade D heavyweight. Crazy as that sounds, imo, a great little man, even when taken out of his element, could upset a big man. Not a good, or great, big man, but a bigger opponent none the less.
Hell, no.......... Duran had a small frame...... Duran was really pushing it as 154 pounds............ At 160, Duran had to be carefull who he fought....... At 168, Duran was beating "Hand-Picked" pugs on ESPN / USA networks.... Besides, anything above 160 pounds, Duran showed love handles and a fleshy girth..... Roberto Duran wasn't gonna beat any WORLD CLASS 168 pounders who could fight........ In all reality, Roberto Duran never should have gone past 147 to 154 pounds, but, he liked to eat and drink and pump some poon...... I understand....... SR.BILLARDO:bbb
Castro looked like a god damn barrel up at CW but he managed on little more then grit. He fought down near the WW and lower limit himself didn't he? Small fighters can do very well at CW and thereabouts anyway. Look at 5'9 Marcelo Fabian Domingo, barrel like body and all doing damned good things at Cruiser.
Castro was naturally bigger boned than Duran..... Castro MIGHT have turned pro at 147, but he quickly settled in at 160 pounds..... 160 was Castro's prime..... Castro was fine also at 168........ 170 and beyond, Castro looked soft..... Castro was aged and worn near the end fighting in the 180s....... He was a slob there........... Roberto Duran was at his limit at 168 pounds.... He was heavy / bloated there, but he could beat bums and stiffs there, too....... Peace... MR.BILL
I like Castro, but he was nowhere near the talent of Duran........... The two split a pair of fights at 165 pounds, but Duran was also age 46 to Castro's mere 29 in 1997..........:bbb MR.BILL
His chin was something else though...probably even better then Duran's. In fact his overall durability was just crazy..he just didnt feel pain like normal people do..Even as a podgy ma'fa he seemed to barely notice punches to his fat belly..Not only did he soak up some wicked punishment to the head and body at the hands of Jirov, he did it fighting half the fight with a dislocated shoulder.
Absolutely his chin was better. First guy to go the distance with Roy Jones as well, even though Jones smashed his nose and broke it in the second round.
Duran looked fairly good against Castro even though he was ancient at 47 years of age. Anyone who doubts Duran's chin should take a look at these fights, he absorbs brutal haymakers from a much bigger, stronger and younger man. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o055XCqPVNM
another one of duran's downfalls was his love to party and celebrate, fatten himself and totally indulge inbetween fights. oh **** maybe thats why i would completely suck as a boxer.
