I seldom hear Bobcat mentioned in conversations of great lightweights, and was wondering how ESB clasic felt about him??? he came in 19th on ESB's lightweight poll and was wondering why he is so far behind Ike Williams, Williams beat Bob towards the end of his career yet when both were closer to primes Bob won that fight. Split a series with jack holds some very nice wins??? So my questions are: How high do you rate him at LW? Does he have a case for top 10? top 15??? Why is he rated so far below Williams/Ortiz??? Why is he rated below Joe Brown, Buchanan, Blackburn, & Shane Mosley??? Unfortunately I do not have any fights where I can watch actually footage of him....I would greatly appreciate it if anyone could steer me towards a source for some of his fights particularrly Ike Williams I, or the 4 Beau Jack fights.
Soul legend Tammi Terrel's uncle ! Don't know that much about him, other than he was very good. Going to do some research.
I haven't seen any film of the man but fight commentator Don Dunphy said he had one of the most consistent attacks to the body. He tends to get overshadowed by Beau Jack and Ike Williams, though I'm not entirely convinced that the two are clearly his superior.
I was rereading through the ESB lightweight top 10 survey and am hoping that TBooze or Manassa will chime in. TBooze was the only one to rank Montgomery in the top 10 (#7) and Manassa was the only one to mention him in any of the posts as potentially waranting a spot, so I would be interested to hear what they (and anyone else) think about Montgomery. Is there any known footage of Bob that anyone is aware of???
If there is footage it sure isn't easy to find. Never thought I'd first see footage of Langford-Jeannette than Bob Montgomery, but there you go. Would appreciate the input of anyone who has seen him in action, and even those who haven't but know a lot about him.
Yes GA, I saw the great Bobcat fight three times in his prime... A great part of th Ike Williams, Beau Jack and Bob Montgomeryat wonderful trio I saw with my dad in MSG..These alltime great lightweights never duckeds each other, unlike the prima donna Mayweather today. for example- I saw Bob Montgomery kod in one round by a neighbor of ours Bummy Davis, who had the best left hook i ever saw...TWO WEEKS later I saw Bob Montgomery fight and beat the great Beau Jack in 15 rounds..I recall they sold a lot of War Bonds at the fight. Just think, 2 weeks after being kod in one round ,Montgomery tackles a great fighter, Beau Jack, for a War Bond Rally...Montgomery was always coming forward going for the body...Tough guy, from a TOUGH era was Monty, yessir !
Thanks. :good Fighting and beating the great Beau Jack just weeks after you have been KO'd by a welterweight is quite incredible. Today it's unheard of, as most fighters take months and sometimes years to come back from devastating defeats. In Montgomery's mind he probably felt he had not even gotten warmed up yet, so why not take another tough fight? Very different mind-set in those days, today a loss can be the end of the world for a fighter. Wish the sport could be as forgiving now, more risks would be taken and as a result better fights.
G A, i wish todays fans could somehow , see Ike Williams, Beau Jack, and Bob Montgomery, along with Willie Joyce ,fight ,each in their respective primes ! i was fortunate to see them as a youngster,Fight each other, often. Each of these great lightweights had over 100 bouts, in that Golden age of lightweights...They were forged from steel, after tackling the best fighters. They had to be good to whip the great competition available those days. Ike Williams, the best puncher, Beau Jack [whipped Henry Armstrong ],Bob Montgomery, the best body puncher, and Willie Joyce, the best pure boxer...Quite a foursome ! to survive
