Marvin Hagler was one of my favourite boxers when I was young. I still rate him highly, and thought he was awesome against Hearns, Hamsho, Mugabi and Sibson. However, Marvin was less impressive against Antuofermo, Roldan and Duran. How do you rank Hagler among the greats, and who do you think would be his hardest opponent?
If it is really out of all time then I hev him top 5 @ 160 and possibly #1 der. p4p Hi hez 2 rank lower dan Duran bat hayer dan Leonard. Very lucky he fought in the decade he did Ten years later and he faces bhop Roy nunn toney GMAN eubank Watson and benn With Collins and calzaghe moving up Hagler wouldn't be top 5 against these guys
Which 5 guys do you see keeping Hags out of the top 5? Just curious. Personally, I see prime Hagler (the one who beat Sibson, Minter, etc) tearing Benn, Collins, Watson, Eubank and GMan to pieces with his fluid counter punching. Especially Benn, Collins and Gerald, all of whom would be target practice. They were easy to hit. He would KO Nunn in the same manner Toney did, only sooner. Hopkins, Jones and Toney are the toughest challenges here. But I see no reason that he couldn't beat all three. Tough fights for sure, but winnable.
I'm a huge Hagler fan but honestly feel he's slightly over rated. This is an all time stocked division and Hagler was terrific but I can see quite a few guys matching up well against him. I don't like Vito 1, the Duran fight and the Leonard fight. Hagler could be thrown off his game. He's an all time great for sure but it's a murderous level,of competition. I like Hopkins, Monzon, Jones, Robinson over him and likely Greb as well.
I agree, He. But name any great fighter and you can usually list fights in which they didn't shine so well. Ray Robinson sure didn't make too many people tremble with his performances against Georgie Abrams or Holly Mims either (and there are others that can be listed too). :good
"I can show you films of Sugar Ray Robinson and Joe Louis on nights they were atrocious."-- Jim Jacobs, commenting on criticism directed at Hagler.
Hagler in my opinion peaked in 1984, right after he toasted Sibson, and beat Duran, i knew he was gonna KO Hearns because his chin wouldn't be able to stand up against Haglers strength:yep, rubber legs shaky chin Hearns was toast the first bomb Marvin landed on him:good Hagler is top 4 , the only ones i would rate above him are Robinson, arguably Lamotta, MAYBE Greb, and Hopkins, and Monzon are very subjective... Folks are quick to criticize Hagler over his 1979 draw with Vito, but so what , he had an off night in a fight many believed he won, and others ***** about his close decision win over Duran in 1983, well so what Duran whipped Leonard in 1980, and Leonard KNOCKED OUT HEARNS in 1981, so be it....
if u want n accurate assessment of Hags, ask me. he was the gretest middle hands down. Jesus wasnt recognized as the messiah among his own people even though miracles were the norm. they just refused to believe. ame principle here I dont see Hopkins being the proper test for Hagler as Bernard was just a modest talent. Jones whipped him. Taylor whipped him. Nunn would do the same, as would Hagler's opponents, as would Monzon. Honestly, I just dont see what the big threat is Benn is hugely overrated, probably on the basis of his upset win over McClellan. outside of that, what does he have? 12 defenses or a tko loss to Watson? The only fighter with the talent to test Marvin is Roy Jones whom I consider a treu Sugar Ray but the Hagler of 81-82 was a killing machine and Roy despite all his skills, would fall like newly mown grass before the blade its like this people, the better the competion, the better Hagler becomes
Pretty much spot on, Only thing is Benn was and should have been favored over Mcclellan or whatever his name was... Benn was fighting in his home country, against an outsider and had faced better opponents, and was more seasoned AND proven than Mccllean, he was the favorite to win that fight and he did by emphatic KO:deal
