Only Middles I would put above him are Robinson and Greb. I have Hagler and Monzon ranked the same, perhaps Marvin slightly higher. People that think Toney or Jones would beat Hagler have clearly only watched youtube highlights of them both....Toney is one of my favorites and I'm currently watching through his entire career, but at middleweight his only impressive win is Nunn. He then got a gift against Tiberi, who is hardly an all time great lol He also had a SD win over Reggie Johnson which many thought he lost. And then of course his draw in the first fight and his win against McCallum in the second fight, which many people think he lost both of (Personally however, I had him slightly winning the first and losing the second). He was no where near active enough to outpoint Hagler and wouldn't be scoring a knockout, plus at middlewight, due to Toney having to shed so many pounds, we saw him legitimately badly hurt for the only time in his career (against Reggie Johnson). In terms of Roy Jones, he is probably the greatest supper middle weight of all time. But he didn't spend too much time at middleweight. His first 19 fights were at middle (against no names, as is expected for a young boxer) and then he fought another 5 or 6 times there before going up to face Toney. His only notable win at the point of going up was Hopkins. So I don't realy see how people can really make a claim for him beating someone who is a certified top 5 of the divisions history. I do not think Hopkins should be rated quite as high as Hagler, and do no favour him to beat Hagler H2H, but I do believe he ranks higher at Middle than Toney and Jones and would also be better in a matchup against Hagler than those two.
Hagler was two A-level fighters in one. A great brawler, and a great boxer. He outbrawled the best brawlers of the era (see Hearns, Mugabi, Minter) and outboxed the best boxers (see Leonard, Duran, Antuofermo). He's one of the best 10 P4P in my book. Talent-wise I think he's the best. But resume-wise, you can't compare him to guys like Harry Greb and Ray Robinson who had so many more fights.
Definitely one of the top three middleweights of all time. Top 20 pound for pound. A fight with Roy Jones would have been very interesting.
Good post overall, I especially agree with this. Hagler was a fantastic fighter who happens to be in one of the deepest divisions ever. As such, I think he can tend to get overrated if only because it's easy to miss just how many great middleweights there's been. That doesn't mean he's still not a tremendous middleweight and a fighter fit for the most hardcore of fight fans.
Antuofermo was a "best boxer"? News to me. Hearns wasn't a brawler.Neither was Minter. Aren't you the guy who said Joey Maxim fought rough like Marciano?:think
You could make a thread on it: When did the greats look like shite? You are right; Ali had Norton, Louis had Conn etc.
CORRECT. Someone also mentioned Calzaghe earlier. Joe was only EVER a Super Middle. Hagler is definitely top 3 Middle.
