How highly do you rate marlon starling

Exceptionally highly. One of the best examples of an aggressive counter-puncher that I can think of.

 

I think the ring magazine or somebody rated him as the #3 or #4 best welter weight of the 1980's or something... Sounds about right to me. I enjoyed seeing his second fight with Mark Breland and bouts with Yungil Chung and Lloyd Honeyghan... His bout with Thomas Molinarez sucked.. He was handely winning that when he got tagged after the bell. The loss to Nunn was one of the most boring fights I've ever seen... Nevertheless, I liked the man and he isn't talked about enough.

 

Used his defence to get inside, could counter well, hard to hurt and exceptionally clever.

The 3rd best Welter of the 80s, all things considered.

 

I don't think that d "1st best welterweight of d 80s" could have done as good vs Nunn , even if Nunn was only 4 years younger than him instead of 7 , and did Starling get any big ring & gloves when he fought Nunn ? or was Nunn d 1 2 get them ? also Starling was a bit smaller himself than Leonard but it was not a p4p question .
R his results vs d younger Breland and Blocker any worse than Leonard's results vs a drained and always chinny Hearns ?
Starling's opposition was better than Leonard and he was a lesser businessman which is why he looked less spectacular . Leonard's opposition was not 1 of d weakest , but Starling's was better .
Starling and his opponents didn't get d publicity of Leonard & his opponents .

 

Starling was great! One of my favorites. Great defence, movement, offence, ring smarts, he had it all.

 

Very good, but not great, he allways came across to me as rather an arrogant SOB, but he would have made the ratings in any era ,imo.

 

You could rate him above Donald Curry.

rate him very highly. his fight versus Honeyghan is one of my favorite beatdowns

 

Very highly, at least in the top five welterweights on the 1980's.I would've liked to see him fight Bobby Joe Young and Milton McCrory in 1982, being that many thought those two in the same light as Marlon, and Hearns, who Starling gave fits to in sparring.

 

As a better version of Winky Wright.....

Just his general in-ring antics, similar to Whitaker. The Starling Stomp for a good example. He liked to **** with his opponents nerves.
