How highly do you rate Shane Mosley's punching power?

I was a bit shocked at the effect that Mosley's punches had on Margarito last night. Margarito has a great chin, he has absorbed the best efforts of guys like Cotto, Williams and Clottey, but Mosley rocked him a few times before becoming the first man to KO Tony. I've always thought of Sugar Shane as a good puncher (like Hopkins) but not a great one (like Trinidad). Have I had it wrong? Is Shane someone you consider to be a powerpuncher?

You have to watch the style of punches, mate. When Mosely is in with a fast and skilled boxer, he mixes his speed and snap more, fires more for points, doesnt fully close his fists inside his gloves, and little things like that. Watch the first Vargas fight. He has a hard time keeping Vargas honest because he just isnt hitting him that hard. Watch last night. Margarito was so slow, he was easy to hit, so Mosely slugged him with haymakers, you could just see the fist clenched like a rock, and him putting his whole body behind each shot.

Mosely isn't a massive puncher, but he was tagging Tony with wicked, wicked haymakers. I saw David Haye type swings last night!

for me he hits harder at WW than he did at LW and he was also fater at WW in his first years in the division than he was at LW.

as for the thread i dont thinks hes as big a puncher as Tito was but hes not far of.

personally i think it was just how many solid, clean blows to the temple margarito received!

hes got good power, but he is not a knockout artist at 147! fast, clean punches will always do the trick....

Agree, Mosely does have very good punching power, however, last night he was tagging Margo flush with the hardest haymakers he could possibly throw from round one through out the end of the fight in round nine.

he's agreat puncher. the great thing about mosley is that he throws his punches with different velocity/power so his opponent never knows whats coming. mosley was going for the homerun last night, he was going for the knockout. Look at the body shots he was throwing you can tell he committed to EVERYTHING. he had no fear of margo's powerr. and when he squares up his punching power is tremendous.

A nice 8 very strong puncher but hes far from a great or elite puncher. I dont think anyone really feels like being hit by him though especially his leaping left hook.

We old timers call it, putting some mustard or some steam on a shot. Its simply throwing harder. When you catch a guy, and know he's there to be hit, you start throwing bigger and harder shots. Look how Shane finished Mayorga. With looping , wide, fast, hard shots, entirely different to the straight, sharp, quick punches he drilled Ricardo with in round 5 that had no effect. Suddenly, Mayorga is getting hit and tripping over himself. Not accumulation so much as just Mosely slugging the hell out of him after he figured him out.

    Keep posting class, mate!

It's a good point you make.

Mosley was loading up heavily on his shots and they appeared to be more forceful than usual, but there's more to it than that, IMV. The accumulation of damage Margarito has taken over the years, particularly most recently against Clottey, Cintron, Cotto, and now finally Mosley has taken an epic toll. When someone like Margarito gets stopped, under these circumstances, it's a convergence of circumstances.

Exactly why I still only rate him a 7/10 at WW.

    Excellent post.

Its different when you know you can put EVERYTHING you have on a punch and land it flush.
